    #8807413 - 08/21/08 09:03 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

i know theres another forum for this kind of thing, but theres more traffic here...

so basically got my copy of windows which i know is good. i go into the bios and set it to boot from the cdrom, save it, put in the disk and restart. for some reason, it wont read the cd and starts up as if i didnt do anything differently. i know my cd rom is good and all connected and such. but im a noob and cant quite figure out why i cant get it to boot from the cd i put in at start up. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeh, if you've got the bios set to read from the cd-rom and that message isn't coming up, it usually means a couple of things.  First, your cd is scratched and it's just a read error, or you've got the wrong cd in there.  I can't think of anything else.

Oh, go back to the bios and make sure the cd-rom setting stuck.  Perhaps you just forgot to save the changes.

ok, when my comp first starts up it gives me 2 options.

press tab for post screen, or del for start up... which takes me into my bios. doing nothing at that screen, then next one that pops up says initilizing mba, press cntrl shift b to configure. where there is an option to change the "boot method" giving me these options

pxe
tcp/ip
netware
rpc

i have no idea what any of this means or if its relevant, but its been set to the pxe setting.

as for the condition of the cd, its not in perfect condition, but it worked fine the last time i used it. and its just been sitting in a jewel case since then, but i guess theres a chance the copy doesnt work, but i highly doubt it. is there anything in any of my setting in my bios or in this other place i mentioned that might keep it fromm booting up with the rom?

oh, and wonce my comp is all started up, and i click to open the disk, the start up menu pops up for windows asking me if i would like to instal. clicking yes tells me to restart and boot from the rom. so basically im running around in circles and may just give up for a bit. unless theres something im missing.

Has this CD ever booted?  It is possible to make an improper copy of a windows CD that doesn't contain the boot code required to start the computer.

How old is this computer?  Some older CD-ROM drives won't boot CDs.

Instead of doing nothing here look for your boot options/boot priority whatever it says and choose cd.  Save the changes and your computer should restart, then you wait, see if you have a message like "press any key to boot from cd"  and press a key.

What version of Windows are you installing?

Do you have two CD drives?  Are you putting the CD in the right master drive?

What kind of computer is it?  What bios is it booting?

What happens when you press tab to show the post?

Try pressing F2 or F12 to see if a quick boot screen shows up where you can select CD drive.

Yeah, sometimes CD drives can be bastards like that for no good reason, especially if they're older.

If you can hang out until morning, or if it isnt solved by then, I have a floppy disk at work I'll upload that will force the CD to boot.  Use that.

it turns out that my copy of windows was bad. after rummaging around my scattered piles of cds i ended up finding one that worked. so all is well.

quick question though, is there anyway around the genuine advantage thingy when downloading the windows updates?
