Monotubs and Pinning
    #8807355 - 08/21/08 08:50 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys, after I finish my PF cakes I'm stuck between choosing bulk on turkey trays or monotubs. I would choose monotubs because they look easier and require little attention.
However, with trays I can easily use pinning strategies by increasing humidity by putting a humidifier in the green house, adding 12/12 light cycle, and lowering temperature.
I would have trays in a large heated tub and then lowering th temperature by placing them in the greenhouse.
With monotubs these things will not be as easy to do.
Light of course...and maybe humidity by using different tubes on my humidifier and connecting them to the monotub, but what about a lot of fresh air exchange?
How do you guys deal with that stuff?
Then of course the hardest thing would be heating them during spawn running so that when I want to pin I could put them somewhere cooler and the temperature is dropped and then pinning is stimulated.

I've looked around for quite a while and monotubs have the nicest pinset and flushes I have ever seen, but what do you guys do to stimulate pinning in monotubs?

Monotubs would be a great step into casings and then after a while a greenhouse. I say this because the research required to build a good greenhouse is quite extensive.

"Have you ever seen what happens when a grenade goes off in a school? Do you really know what you’re doing when you order shock and awe? Are you prepared to kneel beside a dying soldier and tell him why he went to Iraq, or why he went to any war?"
"The things that are done in the name of the shareholder are, to me, as terrifying as the things that are done—dare I say it—in the name of God. Montesquieu said, "There have never been so many civil wars as in the Kingdom of God." And I begin to feel that’s true. The shareholder is the excuse for everything."

Monotubs are alot easier than you think. First, don't worry about the extra warmth when letting the spawn colonize your bulk. It can really just stay in the mid to high 70s the whole time. When it's colonizing, lay some foil directly over the bulk sub and try to seal it against the inside of the monotub walls. Then just poke a few holes in the foil. The rest of the tub can just be ventilated like you intend to do during fruiting. The foil will keep 100% RH and allow CO2 to build up during colonization. When you're ready to fruit, remove the foil - instant drop in CO2 and increase in O2 - that's a huge pinning trigger along with running out of substrate to colonize.

You don't need a humidifier for a monotub - just use a casing layer. The casing material will humidify the inside of the monotub. If the casing layer appears to be drying out over time, just mist it. The casing layer will also create near 100% humidity right at the pinning zone which is another trigger for pinning. If you are using pasteurized peat in the casing layer, the beneficial bacteria can also help trigger pinning.

FAE is tricky, but not as much as you probably think. It's just a matter of having enough holes for FAE but not so many that you can't maintain humidity. Look for as many pics online as possible and guesstimate. Then just drill more or tape them over to adjust. You've got a lot of wiggle room here. You can also use the crumpled wax paper trick (search for keyword "Wax paper" poster name "RogerRabbit") if the RH seems a little low.

Wow, pretty much what I was looking for, thanks!

Let's see if I can get a few more comments on this.
