So tomorrow in my Sociology class we will be debating the reason why bud and other drugs should be legalized or remain the same.
anyone have any good stats, facts, or sites to help out?

more then half my class are stoners haha. I'm sure we'll win as long as one of them doesnt say anything stupid. im planning on pulling the "weed hasnt killed a single person in the 1600 years of its use" line at some point.

1600??? MUUCH more than that. I think Chinese literature describes its medicinal value as far back as 6000 BC. Something like that.

I think it's easier to debate that hard drugs should be legal, since the benefits of legaliztion is so much greater for them (see Legalize Methamphetamine). But if you can track down Pharmacotheon, Ott, spends the first 80 pages of the book laying out the most comprehensive and clear legalization argument I can recall reading.

Needing a prescription != legal
When I say legalize, I mean un-schedule.

Just because something is legal doesn't mean everyone is going to use it. I don't drink and I'm sure most people wont use mushrooms if they were made legal.

Uh, I'd say something like:
education is more important than prohibition, if people were properly educated there would be less drug addicts as they could use their drugs within the confines of accepted society instead of being looked at as outcasts,
many people only begin to use drugs because they are illegal and it helps to give them the image they are looking for
the human body isn't a government regulated piece of property in which they can tell you what or what not you can consume
plus it is unconstitutional as it denies people freedom of religion, and who is the government to classify my religion? if i find a drug enlightening or spiritual then i should be able to use it for religious purposes

My opinion is that if you think mushrooms should be illegal, you have a serious lack of respect for the idea of personal responsibility in victimless crimes.

To be clear: I believe all drugs should be legally available for purchase/possession by anyone who is of the age of consent. This eliminates not only the problems of throwing otherwise non-criminals in jail, but also addresses many serious issues that arise from a government-mandated black market.
Generally when people say decriminalize, they mean decriminalize possession, but not supply. That only solves a fraction of the problem.
