A place to incubate right under my nose!
    #8804948 - 08/21/08 12:14 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Or right under my snake! I thought of it a couple weeks ago while pulling out an exceptionally warm pair of underwear. The drawer under my snakes heater is always in the low to mid eighties, so it was the perfect place for my jars! Just thought I would pass that on.

I can't figure out how to post that picture, but there it is.

incubating can lead to contaims........

Good move.  Incubators cause way more problems then they solve.  I haven't used one in years.  Glass is an insulator and holds heat very well.  I've seen up to a ten degree increase over ambient in the temperature inside the quart jars of grains, when a thermocouple is inserted into the center of the jar.

The other problem with using a tub as an incubator is stale air. It does little good to have filters and holes in your lids if they all just vent into a sealed tub.

Normal room temperature is fine for colonization of mycelium.  Colonization speed peaks in the 75F to 81F range, and falls off dramatically above 83F.  Stamets published a chart in one of his books that said 86F is the fastest for growth, and that is just plain wrong.

Incubators killed my maw an paw.

I think they take too long and are a total pain to build. I got the weakest water heater I could find and it wouldn't heat my incubator evenly and was way too strong even on it's weakest setting. I may try to revive my incubator in the winter but it may be easier to just put them in a warm place.

often a good one.

Though I should warn you guys that jars keep their internal temps up and the external temperature usually only needs to be 75degrees or so. Most people who say they need to incubate at 82-85 are making a serious mistake that is inviting contaminants to ruin their projects.

If you had petri dishes these would be appropriate temps but not with grain or BRF jars that already have a substantial thermal mass and metabolic heat.

Well, my room temperature is usually somewhere around 55-60, and considering I don't have heating or access to any warmth for them any other way, it's the best I can do. Also, due to a careless act of a friend of mine, I'm fairly sure these are contaminated. On the other hand, they seem to be growing quite quickly and consistently.

I feed him baby rats, and it's not usually that brutal. It's mainly bite it, strangle it, and swallow it whole. He's a wonderful snake though, and well worth it.

Nope, mountains of oregon in a really old house, under a lot of tall trees. It gets warmer than that where I live, but this house is so drafty it's always cold, but not worth chopping wood and starting a fire to keep it any warmer.

I haven't seen any contamination, but my friend messed with the syringe and now let's just say these are very much an experiment I have mild interest in, haha... just messing around mostly because I can pick them, and quite a lot of them, soon.

oh yea it says in your user blurb. Crazy I'm at least 10degrees of latitude north and it's flipin warm out I could incubate my jars outside if I wrapped in a blanket for overnight.

Yeah, the walls are insulated with newspaper from the thirties, they were really poor when they built it. I'm entirely surprised it's yet to burn or fall down.

Like I said, it's plenty warm outside, the other day it was like 104(jars not under heater that day), today it's like 65, but my house is just cold the majority of the time because of the trees.
