Offering Some Tips for n00bs
    #8804314 - 08/21/08 08:59 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

There are so many issues with BRF jar preparation/colonization that I thought I could offer some advice.

-------------------------

Measure liquids in "milliliters" and try to use exactly 240ml per the recipe.

1 Cup BRF
2 Cups Vermiculite
240 milliliters water

-------------------------

Now once the Verm has been stirred around and given a chance to soak up the water add the BRF.

Mix very well.

Now when filling your "CLEAN" jar, most folks are stuffing and packing the jar full.

This is why you are only able to fill about 4 jars.

---------------------------

The correct way to fill these jars are approximately 6 heaping tablespoons per jar.

Just take a scoop with the spoon and "lightly" drop it into the jar.

Repeat 5 more times per jar and it should be full with very light and fluffy substrate. <Which is what you're looking for>

I always add 1/4 to 1/2 inch of Vermiculite to the very top of the jar as a contamination barrier.

If everything is correct you should have used every single crumb of the substrate and all 5 jars should be lightly filled and capped.
------------------

Be sure to leave your lids loose/rubber side up and that these lids have Gas Exchange Holes.

------------------

During inoculation, I use 1 hole in the center of the jar lid.

Add only 2cc's of spore solution maximum to the jars as excess moisture will cause delayed growth and possibly ruin the substrate.

------------------

This has worked for me every time.

As for colonization times, if your spores germinate within 3-5 days you should see some major growth within 7-10 days.

15-30 days the jars should be completely colonized and ready to Dunk/Fruit/Spawn.

------------------

I just started 5 jars with a spore syringe I had stored in a ZipLock bag for 5 months.

Left the syringe out over night to warm to room temperature.

Knocked up the jars and they are at about 50% in 7 days.

------------------

This thread is to primarily point out the "Substrate Preparation Step" as being the most important part right along with sterility and spore viability.

i didnt read it word for word... but i didnt see anything in there about sterilizing the jars before inoc... or wiping the sides of the jars before the dry verm... or 4 point inoc that rr points out in his vid...

either way he's saying whats already been said... but its not EXACTLY rr's work...

same here, I apologize. I usually wouldn't waste the energy even responding to this.

I don't mean to discourage you, Notforingestion.

However, nOOb's giving nOOb's advice? sounds like the blind leading the blind...

You know? I pulled this tek out of a book I bought about 20 years ago.
The PF Tek has been around for almost 20 years, and documented, I'm sure, 100's of different ways. Why would some one new to this hobby, offer up advice, without the request? Just good etiquette, in my honest opinion.

Happy Shrooming. Just didn't want this to add to all the other sometimes confusing advice. Just get RR's videos and watch them all. You will see that (I think) he has done the PF Tek so much justice, there is no need for additional PF teks...check it.

I dont see any difference from using cups for water or measuring in mm. You should be judging how moist your substrate is anyway and not everyone uses the exact same verm either, which will effect how much water you need.

Mixing the verm and water first is a good idea, as if you mix the verm and flour then water, the flour tends to fall to the bottom of the mix and clump together. Get the verm nicely moist then slowly add the flour while mixing.

Have no comment on inocing from just the middle except when using LC.

Did anyone read the subject?

It doesn't say: {BRF Tek by NFI - only use these directions, and skip pressure cooking.}

These were only a few TIPS.

I'm not trying to recreate the BRF Tek.

All I did was point out a few details about:
-Filling the jars properly and not over packing them
-And about not adding too much Spore solution to the jars as this may again overly moisten the substrate.

Just from experience, I used to pack my jars to tightly and would only be able to fill about 4 1/2 jars.

Then I would have stalled growth.

I am in no way trying to plagiarize and I do give mad props to RR of course.

I bought his DVD and appreciate all that he has taught everyone.

Sorry to the folks who are offended by me offering a few tips on an already perfect Tek.

Please delete my post if it's that truly terrible. Doesn't bother me.

I was just trying to help.

Have a great Friday everyone!

It wasn't meant as an insult to everyone. I was just telling OP his Tips were appreciated and the all the bullshit he got back for his time was unnecessary.

I don't create fueds on boards, I just wanted to show some love the OP.

Cool.  I'd like to add something too. If you want to cut colonization time in half, use a quarter pint jar instead of half pint. Half the size, half the yield, but very fast and you can fit a ton of them in a fruiting chamber. Also, lots of people like to case or spawn brf as well. This makes 4oz brf jars a quick, contaminant resistant method. If just fruited normaly, they still put out 2-4 or so grams, a solid dose or two per cake. A reliable way to guestimate end-result yield is 10 4oz cakes = 1 oz dry. With 4ozers though, you have to make sure they're well hydrated. Usually a double end case works, and a good layer of wet verm around and under the base of the cake.

cool. I found this post on page 4 and should of left it alone. no hard feelings. I'm off this post for good. Never meant any harm, its just that there is already so much BS to weed thru (not that this is BS as hopefully, someone will take something from this)...just saying.

No don't be sorry Hattori. There is no need to waste space and time by starting a post offering unsolicited advice to noobs. There is overwhelming amounts of advice here for noobs. There are posts after post of this same stuff with a little added here and a little subtracted there.
