water depth in a PMP
    #8803920 - 08/21/08 03:11 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

the tek calls for the water to be about 1 inch from the top of the leca/hydroton etc. is that to protect the cakes from splashing or to allow for an amount of rocks to be exposed and not submerged in water? the reason i ask is i'm wondering if you could fill it up a little more if your cakes are on a rack a little above the rocks and splashing wouldn't be a problem. or does that full inch serve a purpose? thanks

Im assuming you dont want them completely covered so they still have some wicking action similar to perlite?

Correct me if im wrong. But that doesn't make sense. Wouldn't you use the rack for casings. I always thought the cakes are supposed to be on the geolite, perlite, or lava rock due to the wicking of the water, I have been using my PMP about a month now and it works awesome, I would just sit them on some lava rock, or geolite if u can get it and sit back and do absolutly nothing and watch your shrooms flush off the cakes. But ya, i would just follow the tek

at the moment there is a casing in there on the rack, but the next will be cakes. ya the original tek says to put the cakes right on the rocks, but i don't see that as being necessary, and pretty messy if you are doing a DEC or roll. wonder if anyone has done a side by side test were some were on lids and some were on the rocks to see what the difference was.

It will diminish the performance of the cakes  if they sit directly on the perlite. Instead of putting their energy in fruit production they will try to colonize the perlite. If you do not trust my expertise do a search
