Henbane beer
    #8803655 - 08/21/08 01:51 AM (9 years, 8 months ago)

So there's been a little bit of chatting about herbal beers lately, so I thought I'd post my recipe and results of my henbane/damiana beer. Some of what follows is lifted out of my brewing blog.
I called this one "sweet dreams" and it used both henbane and damiana.

---
0.5 lbs. Belgian Caravienne
0.5 lbs. Honey Malt

5 lbs. Dry Amber Malt Extract
3 lbs. Corn Sugar

~1/4-1/2oz anise seed, 25 min before end of boil
3oz dried henbane leaves, 20 min before end of boil
4oz dried damiana leaves, 15 minutes before end of boil

Yeast: WYeast 1332 - Northwest Ale
---

OG: 1.065 measured, corrected (1.067 predicted)

Results:
The first bottle I had of Sweet Dreams (a couple months ago) had a not unpleasant, slightly herbal taste. A little bit of dry mouth was noted, and the buzz didn't feel quite like alcohol on its own. It lived up to its name in producing interesting dreams, I believe for both myself and the lady.
A couple nights ago, I cracked open another bottle, and had a disconcerting experience. The herbal flavor was overwhelming, I couldn't even finish a 12oz glass of it. I got an exceedingly dry mouth, felt slightly disoriented and my heart didn't feel right. I felt very anxious. I felt like I was bordering on anticholinergic toxicity. Perhaps I should keep some physostigmine around?
Obviously there is a bit of bottle-to-bottle variability here. For now, I think I'll go easy on the Sweet Dreams. Maybe splitting a bottle with a friend is a good idea.

BTW I've also got a few links saved up on herbal and historical beer recipes. If anyone is interested, I'll dig them out.
Peace.

Thanks for posting. I have read in a number of sources that brewing henbane cancelled out it's scarier properties, but based on your experience I'm guessing that this is untrue.

I certainly would be interested in your links!

I would be very, very careful with that stuff.  Scopolamine and hyoscyamine are fairly dangerous to be playing around with.

> I got an exceedingly dry mouth, felt slightly disoriented and my heart didn't feel right. I felt very anxious.

Symptoms of hyoscyamine and scopolamine are dry mouth, blurred vision (to blindness), dizziness, nausea, loss of short term memory, restlessness, etc.  Symptoms can last up to three days, assuming you didn't take a fatal dosage.

> I have read in a number of sources that brewing henbane cancelled out it's scarier properties,

The journal papers that I have read state the opposite; fermentation concentrates rather than cancels.  See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1943073 and http://lib.bioinfo.pl/meid:76967 for more details.

Thanks for the links. That makes my decision on whether or not I should brew an authentic pilsner. no!
