Genetic Research
    #8803359 - 08/21/08 12:34 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I can't seem to find any good sites about genetic experiments with plants. I want to create mutations in plants.

You need very expensive equipment and chemicals...

how expensive and do you know where I can find good information about the processes involved in genetic mutations of plants.

Plants are mutating all the time. You could hit them with different sorts of radiation to induce more point mutations.  What exactly are you trying to do?

I just want to create some new plant via mutations

Man you have been making these posts on and off.  You really need to answer this question...
Quote:

What exactly are you trying to do?

Like he said plants mutate with ever generation, but you probably dont want those.  If you purposefully fuck with the plants DNA using house hold stuff, it wont be able to reproduce at all.  You have two options...

1) Do selective breeding at home by growing succesive generations.  This is how we evolved most of our main cereal crops.  However, this takes along time... ususally many many generations.

2) Spend 10 years on a biology degree followed by a PhD and apply for grants to fund a research lab.  Then you could pick and choose which genes you want to change specifically.  (Unlike selective breeding which is done in an ad hoc manner by choosing traits you want to keep instead of genes)

EDIT - There is kind of a third I guess...
3) You can mess around with grafting.  Now this is not really a new plant, its really two plants growing together that looks like one plant.  Have you seen the cacti in the store with the bright tops?  Those are two different cacti grafted together.  Kind of a new plant...

I could take cuttings of mutated plants, wont that work?

How are you going to 'mutate' them?

If you expose them to shit like radiation, they will die.  The only way to truly 'mutate' them is to do my option 1) or 2) from above.

If you want to do option 1), which is more likely... note that mutations randomly occur in a generation.  SO if you want to find a mutant plant, you need to plant as many as possible... then you have a higher chance of getting a mutant.  When you find it, then use it to reproduce.  This is how some of the real exotic looking dogs were breed, for example.

Regardless, I dont see much gain in any of this....

What do you know about breeding cats?

I was thinking breeding those furless cats would be good money.

you're talking about hybridization, the first technique of mendelian genetics. now you know the terms, search.

These goats have been breed to faint.  A few of them (or maybe one) got a mutation that made it faint when startled.  This trait was selectively breed and now there are many of them.  They are quite valuable.

Wikipedia has lots of good information about all the techniques, but it's not laid out in a lesson format. I learnt everything I know about engineering plants at college and from hands-on experience.
The equipment and chemicals will cost at least $30,000 for a basic setup, comprising:
-PCR thermocycler
-centrifuge
-incubator
-laminar flow (unless you build one yourself using instructions on this website)
-electrophoresis equipment
-pipettes
-glassware
-plasticware
-reagents for PCR
-reagents for electrophoresis
-enzymes
-primers
-media and antibiotics

You may also require certification if you are dealing with genetically modified organisms. I don't know if that costs money.
