Difference between gills and spores.

Can somebody please explain the aesthetic difference between gills and spores? (These are the two types of things under the cap of the mushroom, correct?)

Gills are the long and straight ones. Almost like a young child draws rays of a sun. I will eventually be looking for Gymnopilus junionius. Do they have gills or pores?

According to a paper published by the Mycological Society of America in 2006 there are two different species.

Gymnopilus spectabilis and Gymnopilus junonius

Gymnopilus spectabilis is the common name even though some try to change that.
