Help me look at the facts about pan. subbs...
    #8802708 - 08/20/08 10:27 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I read Subbedhunter420's Guide to Hunting and Identifying Panaeolus subbalteatus and it says the pans are out pretty much all year, but more towards after early spring and until late fall. Well, I'm in VT and wondered if anyone in the NE had any experience with subbs in horse/cow fields. Its been pretty rainy lately and I figure that I'll go look for them a few hours after the rain is done. Sound legit? I'd like to find some but they seem to elude me every year (for the past 2 years now).

The same but you can add days if you want to.  Make it 1-5.  The point is you have to look and the more you look, the more likely you'll find.  If you haven't found, you're not looking enough.

Subbs will grow in some lawns and horse pastures.  Rarely with cows.

What mushies grow in grass, that have rings on their caps like a subb? Sometimes it has to rings around it, one more towards the nipple

I'm tired of ppl thinking I dont use the search. Not many say that recently but damn it, I've searched atleast 14 pages and not ONE has answered anythin about North Eastern United States with any good information ONCE. NONE. So, I ask again, and I've asked in the past and no one came up with anything useful. Right now, i'm getting more info then I did and Its helping a little but what ever people can tell me about the experience more specific to NE, tell me.

I'm pretty certain that Pan subbs should be present on NE manured lawns and horse poo. I'm not from VT (I'm in the SE), but I cannot think of any reason why they wouldn't be there.

On a positive note, I have had luck finding Pan subbs and Paneolopsis allies on lawns that aren't necessarily "new," but have received some kind of resodding or reseeding treatment within the past year or so. I think that grass death due to drought and the removal of weedy grasses (e.g. crabgrass) was responsible for the Pan introductions.

Gyms may be a better bet for you anyways, considering the number of shrooms required to get a good dose with the Pan subbs (esp. if you're dependent on "lawn subbs" like me). However, the Gyms are supposed to be nasty tasting while the subbs taste fine...

I MIGHT have found subbs in a cow field earlier this year.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8096782#8096782

They look funny so i dont know.

But everyone including alan keyed it out to subbs... i havent seen them now that its summer and the ones i had didnt make me trip but i didnt have that many so its inconclusive if they were actually subbs.

Found ones that look like that growing behind in a school field near my house earlier this year. Havent looked lately. Maybe I'll look their soon. Most prints seemd not jet black so I thought maybe not, but I should pick fresher specimens too.

In your area they would grow in the fall.  They don't care what kind of wood mulch they grow on.
