89.7 F is that the magic number?
    #8801159 - 08/20/08 02:02 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Hello,
Well let me tell you what ive been working on since i last logged on. I had to devise a incubation chamber that was stealth, simple and effective.

So first I took an old water jug <yellow igloo kind>.
And I found a large lemonade jug for like $1 at big lots and tie strapped it to the handles of the jug and dropped in some rocks for weight.
Next I attached a water pump and filter I got at walmart for like $8 to the side of the igloo jug(so no mold grows and keeps water moving.
Next I place a small water heater <also walmart $11> in the igloo jug and fill with water..

I was able to place 3 recently inoculated jars in and im hoping the temp is correct.

I am reading 89.7F and I was wondering if that would work for som fk cakes?

Well if anyone has any feed back it would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,
Green

Incubators aren't necessary. iv personally made one myself only to disassemble it after two batches of 20 cakes where devastated by bacteria.

all it does is give bacteria a better environment to spread quickly.

now that i stopped using it i haven't lost a single cake to bacteria.

yup, room temp works great.  ive done this long enough and documented all my work to know that using an incubator vs. not does not make a difference.  until winter comes where i run a space heater contoled by a t-stat to keep my walk in closet around 75

Yeh plus that's almost 90 degrees, you're asking for contamination and/or stall-halt of mycellium growth. If you do incubate, it's best to keep the temp right on the 80 degree mark no more. If you have a really good incubator that won't fluctuate at all, 82 is cool but really, room temp is just fine it doesn't make anything slower or weaker.  You can leave your jars sitting on a table in the light at room temp and it won't be any different.  If you need to hide them toss them into a tote or something, but make sure the lid gets opened every once in a while because still/stale air = cobweb and you'll find it on your dry verm layer and have to dip them in peroxide water.

Well I know that the people who have read this are probally saying Dammm bro your going a lil far with making a terranium and all but what you dont know is that my home is usually around 65 because my mother inlaw thinks it will slow the aging process or sumthing...and the only other place is in my bathroom that usually stays pretty warm cuz of the window and no a/c vent. Buttt... the only problem with that is that my jars keep getting infested with knats in there. So thats the only reason why I went all elaborate with my project because it had to be stealth enouph to fit in my closet but also get the job done effectivly...all I realy wanted to know was if that was to hot so I can make adjustments and bring down the temp.

But thanks for the great suggestions!

Thanks,
Green

Don't run it over 80F.  The mycelium makes heat as it grows, and any temp over 83F inside the jar causes the mycelium to slow down.  Also, anything over 80F stimulates molds and bacteria more than mushroom mycelium.
