Is Harry Potter worth reading?

Is it very meaningful?
I feel like reading something right now but I only have Harry Potter or Heinlein's Farmer in The Sky with me. But I want something mythical, archetypal. Not really in the mood for sci fi.

its not really meaningful imo, love conquers all basically. i still say its worth reading though its just the way she writes it makes it fun.

It's certainly not meaningful, and the plot is pretty weak, but the books are written so they pull you right along through it. If you're looking for meaningful reading, not necessarily up your alley. If you're looking for modern pulp, they're just fine. (Have you read Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress? That one's a gem)

yeah, I read the first 8 pages and I'm not really feeling it (of Potter). I don't really like page turners; they suck me in, but what's the point? Pure page turners are sort of like junk food imo.
I haven't read that Heinlein novel. I've read Job: a comedy of justice and Stranger in a Strange Land. I liked Job better.

Job is supposed to be really good, but it was another of the few I never got around to reading.
And yeah, if Harry Potter is basically junk food fiction.

a great book to read in no matter what age you are. it has serious undertones that need some sophistication to be comprehended properly. first 2-3 books are a bit boring but then it get darker and more sirius.

the first books start out slow and if you've seen the movies then just skip them for now and start on three. Even four starts out slow. Shit i think all the books start out slow until harry takes the train and actually gets to the school. the 6th and 7th books were fuckin epic though. absolutly great reads. but don't pick it up the series at the 6th book because you wont understand a thing.
Or if the reading is boring, download the audio book on your computer.

I thought the 6th book was awful, Harry just runs around being a whiny bitch the whole time. And in the 1st book it bothered me that none of them knew who Nicolas Flamel was, I've known that since elementary school (also calling it "Sorcerer's Stone" instead of "Philosopher's Stone" in the American release just seemed retarded). Those are my only real beefs with the series.

Just watch the movies. They're actually pretty good. I ended up Wiki'ing them after I watched them to get a better grasp on the story and characters and all that. It's really entertaining.

I don't think I can name one movie that I enjoyed more than its paperback counterpart. The movies get the gist of the story across, but you miss out on all of the little things that draw you in from the beginning. I loved the little touches of humor in the books, but I hardly even cracked a smile watching the movies.

I can't believe that no one here is talking about Rowling's story being an allegorical comparison to Nazi Germany...
Death Eaters= S.S. Voldemort= Hitler Harry, Hermione and Ron= U.K. Russia, and The US (not in that specific order) Mudblood= Jewish
The connection seemed so obvious in my mind...

There are so many books out there that have real redemptive value that you probably haven't read. Read the classics if you're looking for something worthwhile. Catch-22, Grapes of Wrath, Darkness at Noon.. this is where you should be..

meaningful? no. exciting and suspenseful? yes. am i a dork? yes.
im no fan of reading fiction, in fact, i generally avoid it altogether, but my fiancee got me to try it after i liked the movies, and ive got to tell you, i thoroughly enjoyed reading all 7 books back to back. if you have a vivid imagination, the books are alot better than the movies.

same here om. i like nonfiction, historical, informational and insightful books. fiction is NOT my forte. but my fiancee roped me into it and promised i would love it. well, i did. as said above, book one was a little dorky, but book 3 is where it really picks up. book 6+7 were awesome. filled with violence, rage and it painted a very good picture.

yes, i was a bit disapointed after seeing the last one. if i had never read the books, it would have been great.
speaking of the movies, i just found out the other day that the next movie is being pushed back until next july instead of december because of a more oportune time to open due to a gap in movie openings. fucking assholes.

damn, that sucks.
hopefully this next one won't blow as bad as the last one did. if it does then i'll be even more upset about the later release date. if it's great, then it'll be worth the wait. however, i have a feeling they're going to bungle this next one just as bad, if not worse.

Have you ever seen the movies? Ive never read the books and until recently never watched any of the movies until i downloaded all of them at once via a torrent. i thought they seemed childish and probably not very interesting to watch but as ive gotten older i realized thats a stupid thing to think and movies that are mystical like that i tend to like a lot. i found them to be pretty good. im looking forward to the new one in the fall.

i thought the newest one was the best of the 5 movies so far?
was it dark? check. huge wizard battle? check. great cinematography? check. great soundtrack, again? check.
i mean, the only thing that could have been better, was if it were longer, considering how long the book was.

i'm sorry, but it just wasn't very good. it was like whoever wrote the screenplay read the cliff notes for the book and hardly even followed those, leaving out important things that come up the the next two books.
it's just my personal opinion, but as someone who is a huge fan of the books, it just didn't do it for me. sure it was dark and actiony or whatever, but it wasn't right. there were a few things that happened in the movie that were just plain backasswards or didn't even happen. if you're going to adapt a movie from a book (especially a series) don't mangle it beyond recognition.
again, personal opinion.
