Newbie in vitro success (with pics).
    #8801895 - 08/20/08 07:08 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

Listening to the advice that RR gave me yesterday I let these jars fruit in vitro, and theyve exploded with mushrooms. Some of them are quite large by now so Ill probably harvest and dry them later today. For some reason (probably water concentration in the jars?), the in vitro cakes have been doing much better than the one I birthed and harvested two days ago.

I also sampled some of the larger fruits from the birthed cake, and the potency seems decent. Took one about the size of my thumb (no scale yet) and a few developed pins, they were fan drying for a couple of hours. Threshold effects occured, that strange feeling of things being different, yawning, more aware of extremities, etc. This weekend Ill probably take a dose aiming for a Level 3 experience and write a report and post it the day after.

What do you guys think I should do with the in vitro cakes after I harvest? Continue in vitro or birth them properly (dunk and roll)? After birth Id put them in a transparent plastic tub FC with no holes, because my drill sucks.

This unexpected success with in vitro makes me think Id have a better (safer) shot just fruiting them in jars with a more constant harvest and rehydration cycle. I dont really care about large yields or large mushrooms. This first attempt was more to see how the process worked and if I was capable of doing it right. And having a bunch of mushrooms to dry would be tricky in my case.

Now that I think about it, I dont know exactly how I would go about continuing in vitro. Im sure theres much larger window of contamination once I remove them from the jars and put them back in (probably with a fresh verm layer on top).

Any input is welcome.

And not that it really matters, but the strain is Texas Goliad before anyone asks.

Also, I didnt know mushrooms that small could open their caps. Does that mean its going to drop spores soon? Itd be cool to isolate and grow tiny mature specimens, just for the novelty of it.

Let those cakes get some air, they're fruiting madly lol.
Awesome grow!

Thanks.

I forgot to mention that even with all this progress there are still parts of the cake that aren't strongly colonized, mostly on what used to be the bottom.

After harvest I probably will birth, it would just suck to lose them to contam or general noobery (as I suspect happened to the birthed cake).

Hell, I'm not even sure if I should harvest before birthing and putting in the FC. At least the FC has 100% humidity, the temp is kinda high though.

I attribute my success to all the knowledgeable people here who share their experience with the community, a few lucky mistakes, and good genetics.

Tripping off the fruits of my labor will be awesome. And it all started when I got a bum chocolate from somebody and they didn't feel the need to rectify the situation. Sometimes when you lose you actually win.
