Why would you want to? Assuming there is no thermostat on the unit to adjust the temperature, I would turn it on and place a thermometer inside to at least see what the temperature reaches. If it's less than 140 degrees, I wouldn't waste anytime removing the heating element.

Remember, a food dehydrator without a heating element is nothing more than a glorified fan.

true if the temp isn't high it's not a big deal, but you take a screw driver open it up, cut the coil out, wrap the severed wires up and close it back up. Why would you have to ask this? Without even a description of the dehydrator do you think anyone was going to give you a more complex answer than this?

just put the heat all the way down and it'll work fine. You wont lose any potency if that's what your thinking.

I use a heat only food dehydrator that has no thermometer and tested out an eighth last night and tripped my balls off.

I too have enjoyed many a cup of tea at hot temperatures, not boiling, but hot mind you, and have never experienced any problems either. The biggest distinction here is time left at this temperature.

A cup of tea will not stay hot for long and is typically finished in a short period of time. Mushrooms will easily sit in a dehydrator for 8-12 hours, in most cases longer. Bottom line is that we'll never know for sure without a laboratory to control the conditions and measure results.

Yeah OK one thing, The heat is what dehydrates the mushroom,  It is a fan and a heater, If you don't want the heat get a fan.

You can dehydrate at temps up to 140f or I use lower temps to keep the mushrooms pretty looking.

Don't take out the heating coil I sware by them. I dryed 1oz in about 5 hours on 95f.

without the heating coil your going to be waiting a while to get dried shrooms.

I used a fan with my first few grows and had to slit my shrooms down the stem to dry faster with that fan. its unnecessary with my dehydrator.

your better off just leaving it be.

I use fan and desiccant chamber because this is what I have right now, I suspect that at lower temps dehydrating shouldn't cause a loss in potency and even if it does the heat may break and warp the fibrous mushroom tissue that can keep the actives from you. So it'd take quite some lab experiment to look at if this really works.

really I suspect it doesn't and many people even who use the fan and desiccant have agreed in threads I'd had this discussion in that below 120degrees it's probibly negladgable at best. So a good idea would to be to inspect the temp at which your unit operates and then look into removing it if it operates at a crazy temperature. After all, I'd heard a reputable member (coulda been tahoe) say that fan drying promotes psilo(cybin/cin) oxidization and that quick heating was better than fan drying. I dono what to make of it, but these are some things to consider.

As wronguy said removing the heater from a dehydrator leaves you with just a fan. A small shitty fan.

A box fan supported on a few coke cans blowing upward with a AC filter on the underside is a much better and cheaper and bigger fan at that. Stick a regular old cheap space heater next to it blowing at it full blast and you've got a sweet dehydrator.

Im having the same issue, My Nesco from wallmart is unlike all the others I have purchased in the past. It has no way to adjust the temps and my thermometer is reading 175+ F

I have been drying shrooms in it anyway and they are still potent I must say

What is the max drying temp? And the max time?

I installed a rheostat in mine (cheap $4 wall dimmer switch) to make it adjustable. Just cut one of the wires to the heating element and splice the dimmer wires in series with it. Drill a hole in the side of the dehydrator and mount it - looks like it came that way from the store. I would only recommend this if you are somewhat familiar with electricity and wiring though. If you don't understand that second sentence, then you probably should NOT attempt this (without help?). It may not be worth the effort anyway but when I'm away from home or drying overnight, I hate to come back to a bunch of dusty/crumbly/brittle mushies. This way I can get them just where I want them and adjust the heat depending on the time allotted. I personally believe that there is such a thing as too dry/brittle. As far heat damage goes, I dunno...

Yea, I know all about the too dry mushrooms. It would be nice if you could take some pics of how you modded yours. I understand what your saying and im sure I can do it myself. I have used dimmer switches for things in the past for different things.

brilliant idea I can't count the times I've read posts where people complained about their dehydrator not heat regulating.

OK - Heres the whole thing:

Here's the dimmer/rheostat installed:

The top:

The center had really strange safety torx screws that I had to remove with pliers:

Here's the inside (note the green wire grounded to metal):

The red dotted line represents the old wire that I cut and spliced into. Only 1 wire from the coil needs to be cut (either one). I spliced both ends of the cut wire into the black and red wires on the switch. The plastic coated black and white wires were added for extra working room:

The switch was physically mounted with some small nuts and bolts:

Don't use this wire if you have it:

And here's my feeble attempt at making some type of diagram to show the connections:

This coil is powered with AC power so it needed a rheostat/dimmer switch. If yours has an extra metal thing not shown here with wires going to it (DC Transformer) and other stuff, you would probably need a potentiometer instead of a rheostat. A DC transformer coil also means it's probably possible to get shocked even when it's unplugged.

Again, if this is confusing at all to you, please don't try it without qualified help. You could get electrocuted and/or start a fire. Good luck and please don't start any fires!

btw I've found if you have a metric and standard hexagon (Allen) key set most every torx screw can be opened with one.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to make that post! I will document my Dehydrator Mod as well.

Mine has allot less room to work with. My heating element is actually detachable and sits on top of the trays:

btw I've found if you have a metric and standard hexagon (Allen) key set most every torx screw can be opened with one.

True - Unfortunately, these torx have some type of "security" nipple thing in the center of the head that keeps any regular tool from fitting into it. I tried allen wrenches and torx bits. I even brought it up to radio shack and they said it was a proprietary head used for vending machines and cash registers and stuff. I tried to get those to show up in the picture but I guess they didn't...

Wow, thanks for taking the time to make that post! I will document my Dehydrator Mod as well.

Mine has allot less room to work with. My heating element is actually detachable and sits on top of the trays:

It looks like your fan may be contained in the top detachable part too..? If thats the case, it will be a pain to mod and probably not look very good either, since there's really nowhere to hide the switch. Is the fan in the top also? You don't wont the fan to be regulated with the dimmer - just the heat. You probably already know all of this though...

On the Torx with the nipple, use a drill and drill a hole in the end of your torx bit so it will fit down into the hole.  A drill press and vice is handy here...
