Suggestions and Questions on Outdoor Cult.
    #880092 - 09/12/02 09:26 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

OK, there have been numerous posts on outdoor cultivation yet still no complete forum on outdoor cultivation (Ahem...admins?). Anyways if we can get enough going here maybe it will be a source for newbies or others to get the grasp of this technique. I'll start out with my (friend's) experience...

He had 1 quart of near-fully colonized rye when it started to develop the goo-ish liquid characteristic of Bacillis (sp?) or sour rot. Since the jar was really damn near completion he decided to make an outdoor bed. He dug a 1x2 foot hole 4 inches deep in a clearing around some bushes and other plants. He then mixed peat moss (70%) and vermiculite (30%) and added some lime to balance pH (is this even necessary outdoors??) and made a 2 inch layer. Then a full quart of the rye was spread evenly across the topand covered in wheat straw that had been soaked for 12 hours, forming another inch of layering. This patch was then covered with a mix of peat moss/vermiculite and some fairly old potting soil...he was just working with what was around. Mind you, nothing was sterilized or pasturized except the original rye grain. leaves and loose dirt were cleared form around the bed to make sure any ant infestations could be noticed quickly .Sadly as he was clearing away the junk, he did notice quite a few lone ants....but there is no such thing as just a few ants. Since then, 12 ant colony traps (that claim to kill the queen ant as well) were placed around the outdoor bed and suprise suprise- not an ant in sight after just 5 days. Normally his outdoor patches are terrorized by the little devils . Out of curiosity the bed was checked today (6 days after planting) and the mycelium is only about a centimeter or less below the ground! This is relatively fast growth compared to other experiences and the network looks almost ready to produce fruits! Oh yeah, and it was watered every 3 days with a watering can because there has been no rainfall...

It might be useful to know that this is only the growers 3rd attempt outdoors after nearly 3 months of fruitful yet risky indoor cultivation. Just goes to show that if you can colonize a simple PF cake without contams you are capable of growing successfully outside with very little exerience.

So let's hear it shroomery, post any questions, comments or experiences with OUTDOOR cultivation and we'll see if we get something good started here.

chillin'
~Bill

Outdoors is a good way to go for sure. Glad to hear things are working out well for you.

Is it possible or worth trying to apply spores directly to a natural substrate..such as insilage (chopped sorghum for cattle feed)without first developing a good casing in a sterile substrate?  I've noticed many different species naturally growing here, the cattle droppings as well.  Thanks.
