somethings BUGGING me!
    #8800841 - 08/20/08 02:29 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

Hello,
Hello again my fellow shroomerz and my how long its been since I can take a lil time on my lil hobby. I was checking some of the corn jars I did about two months ago and it seems that two are almost completly colinized butttt.....on top of the slow development and growth I also seem to have knats having an orgy in my jars..some are worse than others.... But heres my question the two that are almost ready can I still use them even thou the bugs have infested the jars? I mean from what I can see there was no sign of green anywhere just fluffy white sweetness.... Oh and all the knats are out of those already...

So what should I do?? scrap it or save them??

Thanks,
Green

IMO id chuck em.  You may think all the gnats are gone but some may still be there.  So why risk the gnats getting anywhere else but the jars.  Although if they got in the jars you probably already have a bunch of em.  Take care of the fungus gnats before you start again.  :2cents:

You know vater I was hoping someone would say that! Because thats exactly what I did with one of the jars already... I dug a lil hole put in the corn and covered with fertilized soil....well i guess well see what happens... Ima do the same with a flower pot on my porch and see what develops....We just went throu a mild hurricane down here and evrythings nice and humid..So it should help as well.

If anyone else has any more suggestions they would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks,
Green

Corn has given me some success in the past...  However the mycelium tends to be weak and growth does have a tendency to stall out.  Breaking it up and tossing it outside in a compost heap like that other fellow was suggesting has worked for me.  I mixed it with some Lobster Compost from Coast of Maine.

Try rye berries for spawn and combine with straw or hpoo FTW next time.

If you do bury it do it in a flower pot or youll have mice and squirrels and everything else eating the corn.  Im dealin with the crazy vermin right now.

Since I started this lil project yesterday we have had plenty rainfall  and plenty of sun today..my lil mound is at the base of a big tree in the shade.. How long should it be before anything would happen and when should I check?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Green
