Multi lingual question
    #8799525 - 08/20/08 05:28 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Ive always wondered with people who are fluent in more then one language
do your thoughts cross over between languages
or do you normally think in your original language first?

 cheers if any one can answer this

I am Dutch and speak English almost fluent after reading listening and travelling for a long time. Whenever I use English I don't translate it back to dutch in my head or whatever. sometimes I even catch myself thinking in english (you know, your tiny thinking voice).

I speak english primarily and learned spanish working in a kitchen.

I speak to myself (think) in both english and spanish, depending upon my mood.  I speak spanish if I want to practice it or if I've been drinking or if I just want to.
Usually it's in English, though, as my spanish vocabulary is not fully stocked...

Jah Love.

The overwhelming favorite for most people is Chinese. There are two main reasons for this. It's not
the grammar because Chinese grammar is actually quite easy. It's the tones. The same word can be
said in four different tones and have four different meanings. That's just Mandarin Chinese. In some
other dialects (like Cantonese) there can be up to nine distinctly different tones! This makes this
language very difficult for someone to learn if it is not their native language.

The other reason Chinese is so difficult is the traditional writing system that is still widely in use. There is a different symbol for every word! This makes even a basic vocabulary of a few thousand words very difficult to learn to read and write.

There are other candidates for the Most Difficult Language to Learn such as Arabic, Russian,
Japanese, Finnish, Hungarian, Navajo and many others.

The stage our thoughts are played out on is with our internal voice.  Like you said we think in a language.  In this manner, our sense of hearing shapes our very consciousness.  Those who have never had hearing must have their consciousness and active thoughts in a way we can not understand.  Consciousness may manifest in many different ways given different combinations of sensory input.

I once read of a study... In some languages they dont have different words for blue and green.  In their language, those are different shades of the same color.  So some psychologists studied how fast they could distinguish between the two colors.  Interestingly, the people with the same word for green and blue took longer to distinguish the color than people with different words for green and blue.  The language of a person not only influences the way ideas are framed, but also the ability to make decisions!

The one good thing about my sociology class was the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis.

actually i hear english is the hardest language overall for anyone who has not grown up learning it. i learned a bit of german back in highschool but i didn't care enough to pay attention so i can't remember any of it really.

Dr :ronpaul: says to stop trying to treat the side-effects of big government and focus on the core issues. End the Federal Reserve/audit the gold reserves at Fort Knox, abolish the IRS, end all wars and occupancies, stop the building of an empire that will inevitably fail, and cut all unconstitutional federal programs. Put the power back in the peoples' hands by ending this nanny-state.

Nope... I mean, now that you mentioned it I can't help but hear it, but that's like the whole pink elephants thing.

I didn't learn to read by reading aloud, so I'm really not sure how I actually go about doing it.  I just see the words and understand it, really... more of a subconscious process than anything else.

Well when you read you might not say the words out loud but I'm sure you may repeat them in your head...

My old Spanish teacher told me the night she realized she had dreamt in Spanish, she knew she was fluent.
