Foes? Most likely
    #8798599 - 08/19/08 09:42 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

I found these today growing behind where I work in the grass.  They were all together. I have not had time to do a print but the gills are jet black. I'm pretty sure they are not actives but wanted to get you guys opinions before I shit can them. sorry I know the pics suck

From here the gills look jet black just like you said.  Foes can have dark gills, but never jet black.  Looks like you got yourself some Panaeolus subbalteatus--Subbs.

Good find.

There was some myc on the bottom that almost looked like it turned a light blue on one of them but I couldn't say for sure..

You could try wetting a fairly good cap and placing it under a glass and try to force a print.  If the print is black, you've got a winner.

Bluing mycelium at the base is a sign of Subbs.  However, most of the bluing described on the forum is a sign of wanting to see it.

Also you said where you work. If that is an office or an office complex it could be fertilized or well-kept lawn.  That is a prime habitat for lawn Subbs.

I wanted to note the vertical ridges on the stems on the last pic.  Its hard to tell from just the pic but it looks as if the ridges may spiral the stem?  Thats the 1st indicator for subbs I noticed.

Just checking, but do foes have the vertical ridges at all?

I think I read somewhere that foes are usually solitary as well..these where all together in one spot. I am doing a print as we speak..hopefully they turn out to be subbs, and with the promise of more rain all week, hopefully I will find more (I mean I would need like 50 to get any effects if they indeed where subbs right?)

Well the print did not drop very much at all..barely anything..but from the few "speckles" I got..it still looks black..so I think I will go ahead and keep them..hopefully I find more..If not I dunno..maybe lemon tek them this weekend and hope for even the slightest ultra light buzz?

I don't see why not. If you're going to keep them be sure to dry them.

I won't have access to my dehydrator (or any drying device for that matter) until Friday. I'm using the "put the mushies in a container on a wet paper towel with Saran wrap over them with holes" trick for now. Hopefully that keeps them fresh enough until Friday when I can dry them.

That can work too.  Another method for drying is a refrigerator.  Almost all of them are frost-free or self-defrosting nowadays.  I sometimes put mine in a paper bag in the frig.  Small ones like yours dry in a day.  Plus the refrigeration cuts down on bacteria.
