PC and Quart jars
    #879678 - 09/12/02 03:22 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

My friends PC will only fit Quart Jars in it if their lying down.  (Even tried it with the rack out).. As long as the innoculation hole is above the water (Maybe put a few jar tops under it or even a rag so its tilted up above the water line an inch or 2) line do you think this will work?

I dd a search and I found this:

Yes, it should work, so long as you make sure to still have enough water in the pressure cooker that it doesnt all evaporate, and try to limit the amount of glass surface directly in contact with the metal of the pressure cooker as it conducts heat faster....and yes a quart = 2 pints.

i had a pc that would only fit one and if it was slanted. I later found out it could hold 3, 24oz classico pasta jars. they even take small mouth lids. They have "ATLANTIS MASON" stamped into the glass on the side. They are slightly smaller than quart jars, but work the same. It might also help keep contams down. Try out other pasta jars. i used RAGU also, but they don't take standard mason lids.

I use small autoclav (half pinters ) , there are times when I must "lay down" things so they will fit . Create some sort of prop to keep them in place . Just make sure there is air space at the top for venting of steam. Keep water level low enough so it will not spill over into item being cooked , you may have to do less at one time , but oh well . " Gotta do what you gotta do "!
Good luck .

I recently tried pressure cooking a vlasic Qt. pickle jar and it cracked on me. Mind you, I also had two 1/2 pint wide mouth ball jars and they were o.k. i am using an all american pressure canner. It was at 15 psi. for 60 minutes.
Hope it works out for you.

your right. Not all of them are made to the same specifications. I can vouch for classico though. they definatly work, and have the right kind of threads. There also considerably stronger than most other disposable jars. i used to keep them anyways to put nails and other stuff in.
