could mold get through 1 layer of post office tyvek?
    #8797960 - 08/19/08 09:35 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

i have some brf jars that got some mold and they only have 1 layer of post office tyvek on the tops (with the metal lid with 4 holes poked in it)  and i was wondering if mold could have gotten through these and gotten airborn?  i do have some bulk substrate colonizing in the same area.  i did not open the jars or anything and they're outside now.

It's suggested using two layers of tyvek if it's thin, as there's always a possibility.  I use one layer of tyvek though w/ nail-holes in the lids, so only a tiny nail hole is exposed anyway, so I'm not having problems w/ a single layer.

are you using the dry verm layer? yes? if so then the were possibly contamned during inoculation.

i know that  with a wet filter bacteria can grow threw the filter.

no it doesnt have the dry verm layer.  this is the first time trying it wothout it and using tyvek instead and now some of them are contaminating.

right. are your all growing edibles.

but to the op.  im not sure what the filtration rating is on a single piece of tyvek but im sure you should be fine.  as long as your not shaking it around and disrupting it.  just open it up in some bleach water and get rid of it asap.
