Drywall -> Gypsum via cheese grater
    #8797620 - 08/19/08 06:09 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

So I drove all over the city looking for powdered gypsum and failed so I decided to make it myself from some drywall.  It was easier than I though.

8 sq inches of drywall turns into a little more than a half quart of gypsum.

I ground it up with the smallest holes on my cheese grater without removing the paper.  The paper then sifted out easily in my colander.

Enjoy:

Side note, take the drywall "stickers" for free at your local home supply store.  they are 2x4 strips of drywall they put under every 40 sheets so forklift blades can lift them up. ask a cashier or just take them and leave.

This is what I love about this place, finding ideas that are sooooo easy and use basic garbage to do something I realllly love.  Brilliant!

Drywall... Damn I went out and bought a bag of 70% Gypsum pellets.  (The other 30% is like sulfer and stuff) it's soilbuster.  I can't grate it but I can crush it to a powder.

Being a drywaller I thought you should know that drywall binder is latex.  I don't know how that effects growth. I do know that some farmers use scrap drywall for adjusting ph of there soil. I was always scared to try it for mushrooms.  I might try it sometime.

Thanks for posting this. Using a hammer to pound drywall over and over into a powder is quite tedious.

I'm trying it your way next time.

:smile::thumbup:

I'm not sure about the latex.  I plan to use some of this gypsum to supplement a wood substrate for some shiitakes.  I'll drag this thread back up when I get my results.
