i brought this cactus a few months ago from a place here that is pretty much the same as home depot.
i knew that i needed to re-pot, which is what i normally do anyway, and i have just waiting for the weather here to not be so damn cold.
anyway, i was surprised when i took it out of the pot, to see it was nearly all roots and hardly any soil.
the pot on the left is the one that it came in, i was going to pu it in a mammoth pot, but i thought i would take the advice of experts, and go gradually bigger with the pot. i really can't see whay putting it in a huge pot would really matter, as long as you don't overwater.

Thats not actually too bad, most potted plants will be similar to that. A big pedro i bought awhile ago had about 1cm of soil between itself and the edge of the pot.
I dont see why it would be a bad idea to plant it straight into a huge pot, i think it would a have a healthier root system that way in the long run

That looks more like a bridgesii than a pachanoi, maybe because its frosted. Maybe a bridgesii x pachanoi?

i think it look like the typical san pedro that is for sale by most of the vendors in the USA
bridgesii has good size spines

Thats a definite Pedro though.
I would break up the rootball and let the roots heal and then plant it in a HUGE pot.

with trichocereus go with as big a pot as you can find or have space for, like you say it is fine so long as the drainage is good and you don't over water 
i do have mine in relatively small pots, but only for now, just while they are still young and the ones that started as cuttings are rooting up 
also space was an issue for me as i was growing indoors until earlier this year...
but now i'm growing outside and in the greenhouse i intend to repot them all into big ass pots at the start of next year...

agreed ,i grow outdoors and i get the biggest pot i can carry when full of soil and cacti!!

I'm gonna need to use a hand cart soon for my bigger ones.
I gotta put them in at least a 10 gallon pot when I get the chance 
I wish I lived where theres no frost because they would be going in the ground.

awesome, i'm going to re-pot into the huge pot tonight.
i should always just go with instinct when it comes to cactus growing, reading information on other sites often leads me astray.

My bad, they do come much larger though, i just posted the first pic that I found. They're used for moving large trees whose rootballs are too large for only a small sitting platform like other cart varieties.

yeah man those things can haul trees. I have used big ones landscaping before. they are setup to be well balanced when loaded also and very easy to use. They are like the Cadillac of hand carts
but if my normal hand cart will haul refrigerators it will haul huge cacti. I just need to strap the pot to the cart first and then it will haul some BIG cacti
