Coir and rye
    #8796059 - 08/19/08 03:35 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

I know this has probably been answered before, I just need some clarification.  I am using rye for my next grow, and I want to spawn to coir.  When you're doing a bulk substrate like coir, do you just mix the colonized rye together with it?  Or is it put on top like a casing layer?  Maybe someone could recommend a good setup for rye/coir?  Do I add vermiculite or just use straight coir?  I'm growing Koh Samui btw.  I live in a dry climate, so maybe I should add a casing layer too?

you mix with spawn let colonize then case. put alight later coir over exposed grain . this keeps contams from setting in on the grain. once colonized case it.

If the coir is fluffy (I've read it is, but never used it) you shouldn't need to add vermiculite.

The rye should be throughly mixed with the coir. People used to use straight coir as a casing layer (does anyone still do that?).

Anyway, a non-nutritious casing layer like 50/50 casing mix can be added to the top to protect the coir/rye mixture... or straight coir could be used. I don't like the concept of having exposed grain at the top of a grow.

You can add additional colonized rye on top of the sub (and under the casing). I've read this causes quicker, larger flushes... but you defiantly want the rye mixed in with the coir.

alright, so my normal peat/verm +lime casing mix should be ok for the rye and coir substrate?

coir isnt a good choice for a casing when using it as a substrate. as you can guess its just like adding more bulk. coir has lost of food for mycelium and when used as a casing myc rips thru it often causing overlay problems. fifty fifty tek is good for casing. when breaking up the grain to spawn to bulk you expose parts of the grain so you want to cover the top with a light layer of pasturized coir. let it all colonize then case.
