Marijuana scandal hits Japanese sumo
    #8794350 - 08/19/08 07:03 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

For the first time sumo wrestling's governing body can recall, one of its revered athletes has been nabbed for drug possession.

Police arrested 335-pound Soslan Aleksandrovich Gagloev -- better known as Wakanoho -- on Monday. They say they found a third of a gram of marijuana in his wallet. That's enough to land him in prison on a diet of forced labor for five years if he's convicted.

It's the latest black eye for a sport closely intwined with Japanese culture and history. Fans have long expected humility and dignity from their sumo wrestlers, so the drug arrest has stunned people in Japan, where the national sport has taken a beating in the last year or so.

First, police charged three sumo wrestlers and their stable master with beating a teenage sumo to death last year. They deny it.

Then Japan's top sumo -- Asashoryu -- apologized on national TV after being caught in an apparent lie. He pulled out of an exhibition tournament, saying he was hurt. But television cameras caught him playing soccer in his native Mongolia days later, apparently without injury.

The Japan Sumo Association suspended Asashoryu -- the first time the country's yokozuna , or top sumo, has received that punishment.

Now comes the drug arrest.

Police say they found marijuana in Wakanoho's wallet on June 24 and arrested him Monday after an investigation. The 20-year-old Russian wrester, who stands six feet four inches, has not entered a plea, authorities said. But the arrest prompted the Japan Sumo Association to apologize to fans and pledge to investigate.

Sumo wrestling, which traces it roots back 1,500 years, is struggling not just within its ranks, but in popularity, as well.

Fewer Japanese boys are entering the tough life of sumo, so the Sumo Association is recruiting foreigners like Wakanoho and Asashoryu. Attendance is down at the stadiums, as more Japanese embrace soccer and baseball.

All these struggles may have a silver lining.

"These allegations, be they true or false, this one included, they're all turning points to a more open sumo," says Mark Buckton, a sumo analyst for the Japan Times. "It's good for the sport in the end. It can open up the sport, make them follow modern society."

I remember being in DARE when i was much younger and some of the stories they would tell you are not only ridiculous, but completely untrue. One story was that a woman was on LSD and thought her infant was a turkey so she baked it in the oven. Now I look back and think thats hilarious, but at the time I guess it scared me.

Japanese are super strict about drugs. When I was there it was a VERY big deal, but alcohol is NOTIHNG. It's the best example of bullshit involving drugs vs alcohol.

Japans strict drug laws also force Marijuana to be stupidly expensive, 50-100 US dollars per gram for high quality bud is the going price.

sounds like someone with mediocre grow skills could do alright. Space is quite limited though...

They can make robots and miniature cell phones but they can't distinguish the difference of physical and mental damage of alcohol vs marijuana.

It goes way back to traditional Japenese culture. At leasts its not as ignorant as many of these Asian countries that execute drug mules without any consideration.

Way back to traditional Japanese culture?  You mean like when taoist monks used cannabis? How does that justify treating it so harshly?

I don't think anyone was trying to justify it so much as trace the roots of the madness.

There will never be a valid justification for any severe punishment over cannabis use.

No, but blaming it on ancient Japanese culture ignores the fact that cannabis had a legitimate role in ancient Japanese culture.  I don't get what he's trying to say there.

Banned sumo wrestler suing to get job back

A Russian sumo wrestler banned for life by the Japan Sumo Association for marijuana possession is suing for back pay and a return to the ring.

The lawsuit was filed in the Tokyo District Court on behalf of the wrestler formerly known as Wakanoho. It seeks payment of the wrestler's monthly salary of $12,000 and to have him reinstated as a sumo wrestler in the association.

The sumo association played its first-ever lifetime ban on an active wrestler last month when the Russian, whose real name is Soslan Aleksandrovich Gagloev, was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

"If you look at past punishments against other sumo wrestlers, the ban was too harsh,'' his lawyer, Makoto Miyata, said Friday.

Miyata said examples include three Japanese wrestlers who were arrested on suspicion of beating a junior wrestler to death last year but were only suspended, and a wrestler in the top division who hit and killed a pedestrian while driving in Osaka in 2000 but was only forced to sit out one tournament.

Gagloev said he first appealed to the sumo association to be reinstated, but was told that was impossible.

"I understand that a lawsuit is not a good thing, but I'm suing so that I can return to sumo,'' he told reporters Thursday.

The 357-pound former wrestler also faces the cancelation of his work visa and expulsion from Japan.

The sumo association refused to comment because they had not examined the suit.

Banned Russian sumo wrestler alleges he was forced to lose matches

link

A Russian athlete banned for life from Japanese sumo wrestling over a drug scandal says he was forced to lose matches in exchange for bribes.

"I was forced to accept money and put in unfair bouts," Soslan Aleksandrovich Gagloev, known by his ring name, Wakanoho, said Monday through an interpreter.

Wakanoho also accused trainers and other wrestlers of smoking marijuana.

He said he will give further details when he testifies in court later this week as a witness for the weekly magazine Shukan Gendai, which faces a defamation suit by the Japan Sumo Association and several wrestlers over its articles last year alleging bout-fixing.

"The world of sumo is dirty," Wakanoho said. "I just want to make it a clean place."

Wakanoho was arrested in August after police said he had a small amount of marijuana in his wallet. He was the first wrestler ever to be expelled from sumo over drug use, though prosecutors later dropped the criminal case due to insufficient evidence.

Tests conducted by the sumo association found two other Russians - Roho and Hakurozan - also positive for the drug. They were expelled and the head of the sumo association resigned.

Wakanoho has since filed a lawsuit, demanding the association reinstate him as a sumo wrestler and pay his monthly salary until he is hired back.

On Monday, Wakanoho told reporters it was unfair that only the three Russians were punished over the drug scandal.

"How come those Japanese trainers and wrestlers who are the ones smoking marijuana are not punished?" he asked, without elaborating.

The association has previously denied bout-fixing allegations. It had no immediate comment on Wakanoho's accusations Monday.
