Tips for Growing in Summer?
    #8795869 - 08/19/08 03:00 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I've found in my personal experiments that you're more prone to bacteria-contaminations in the summer.
I don't have air condition, so I find it rather hard maintaining colonization temperatures. (We're looking at 81-90 degrees F)
In the winter When temps were 50-75 degrees throughout the day, I had no problems with bacteria because it doesn't thrive in cooler temps, I only lost 2 maybe 3 jars during the whole winter, and didn't experience the delayed and stalled colonization.

Does anyone have any tips that I may have overlooked that will make summer growing a mite easier or more managable?

Thanks

still air glovebox? grow in areas that are clean and not carpeted.practice clean procedures like washing your hands or taking a shower before checking on your grow.  you dont want colonizing mycelium to reach temps over 86 to be safe. 70-80 is good.

I use a glovebox, I have no carpet in my house... it's all hardwood floors, I keep my grow room insanely clean, I even wear a face mask when I'm checking on casing trays or jars.
The temps for colonization is sporadically going over 86 degrees F.  Maybe that's the problem... otherwise, I have no idea what's going on because before I never got molds or bacteria in anything I did (inoculating, Making syringes, growing etc.)

Increasing the FAE might help, if you can maintain humidity levels.

If the temperatures are the main problem how about keeping your jars in a cooler with ice pack(s). Then if it starts getting to cold lift the lid on the cooler enough so the fresh air mantains your optimal temp. Also keep the jars directly off the ice with some bent mesh wire. Reverse incubator.

yes you my friend would benefit alot from a window ac unit. keeping colonization in the low 70,S  would cut down on bacteria as it thrives in higher temps. also anything you can do as far as ph adjusting could help as well.
