Fan drying cubenesis ~ Noob question.
    #8795505 - 08/19/08 11:59 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Recently I have been attempting to dry freshly picked cubenesis using several fans and a mesh stand  in a dark room. My question is, how do I know when my caps are completely dry, or dry enough to store? Also, when dryed using this method, how long will the mushrooms stay good, and what storing options (asside from freezing) do I have? Im not looking to keep any dry mushrooms for more than a month or so, will a plastic baggy be sufficient?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and happy tripping.

you'll know they're dry after 48h OR whenever they are dry enough to crack. you can also pick apart the stem and see if there's some mushy stuff inside. if there is its not dry from the inside.

and yes, after drying they stay good for half a year, or even longer. only once did i get mold/rot on shrooms in a baggie and that was when i didn't dry them good.

you might want to use a bit of desiccant also to finish the drying cycle.
Damprid works well and can be found at home depot and walmart for cheap.
I use a coffee can and some screen, cut the screen to fit into the can, pour in damprid, place screen over damprid and put mushrooms onto screen, cover can for a day or so until cracker dry.
Peace.

Would it work to just place the damprid in an airtight container with a large amount of space seperating it from the mushrooms? or is the screen the best bet?

yes. and i would recommend it.  i fan dry for 3 days and desiccant for 5days.  i use silica gel kitty litter.  i think damprid is the one that turns to liquid.  i just dont like that idea.

if your going to store them other than in the freezer store them in a cool dark place but store them in a paper bag not a rolled up plastic baggie.  the paper bag will breath.

yeah you can do it that way too, you dont need the screen.
Thats just the way that I came up with using what I had laying around.

well I've never had them get cracker dry just from a fan, even after 2-3 days. They get much drier with a fan for 2 days, but after that I just put them in the damprid container itself, it's got some cup with slits in it you can set the shrooms on above the damprid. For the bigguns I use a tupperware with damprid in the bottom, and the shrooms set on a plastic lid tray thingy right on top. To preserve I put some damprid in a coffe filter, seal it shut with staples, and drop it in a big quart jar and toss the shrooms in the jar. You'll know when to change the damprid because it gets wet.
