Oysters in jars on wood substrate
    #8795165 - 08/19/08 10:55 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Beech wood flour(particle size from 0.7-2mm) was mixed with ~15% wild birdseed flour, water was added to a moisture content of ~55%, the substrate was packed in jars, in the middle a hole reaching to the bottom with 1/2 inch diameter was made.  The jars were fitted with a polyfil lid and pressure cooked for 1 hour. After they cooled down, each jar was inoculated by putting a piece of Pleurotus pulmonarius agar down the hole. The jars were left to colonize at room temperature for 1 month, the colonization was slow, because the substrate was righter dry, next time I will make it wetter. After full colonization the jar lids were removed and a piece of aluminium foil put over the opening instead. A hole was punched in the foil with a pencil. The jars were put in a cellar, at ~18°C(65°F) and ~70°RH. After 10 days the mushrooms were ready to harvest. Yield was merely 50g per jar due a too dry substrate.

Interesting pic.

You should try next time to add some bran to the jars to buffer the yield! And yes, next time grain spawn to inocule the jar will be better!

Is it a good strain? Is possible to obtain a wedge or petri for the FSP ring?

PM me, thanks.
Fabio

Looking good.  I'm surprised the caps didn't crack at 70% humidity.  Were you misting?

What's your lighting setup?

Not at all.

>What's your lighting setup?
Natural daylight through a small window, it is quite dark actually.

I harvested them, rehydrated the substrate by pouring water in the jar opening until they didn't absorb anymore(quite a lot, perhaps 150ml per jar) then drained the jars by turning them over for 10 seconds or so, and covered them with foil again. After 2 days the top surface is showing strong growth, I will be putting them in the cellar tomorrow again for the next flush.
