Would spraying your glove box with oust help with overall cleanliness?
    #8793945 - 08/19/08 02:07 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

I know you should be wiping the whole place clean with alcohol, but as the title says, would spraying with oust in addition to wiping with alcohol help?

I used oust before I had a glove box.  Since it advertises that it kills bacteria and other stuff in the air I figure it would help or at least wouldn't hurt, and for a couple of bucks why not?  And to answer your question I don't see why it wouldn't help with the overall cleanliness in the glove box.  The idea of being steryl is to be as clean as possible so why not take the extra step.  IMO its getting into good habits.  In fact when I was inoculating my BRF cakes last week I kicked myself because I forgot to buy some oust (didn't get any contams anyway)

no more than wiping and possible spraying (though I think it is overkill) with 70% alcohol solution would be required. I don't know what is in oust but it would not hurt though it may not help either.

Glove boxes work on the concept of still-air, not sterility. The idea is that you're working in a confined space without drafts, making it more difficult for contams to fall on what you're working on.

It probably won't make much of a difference, but if it makes you feel better, knock yourself out. Just make absolutely sure that you don't keep an open flame for needle sterilization in your glove box or the results could be explosive.

glove box works on the principal of still air. so any contaminant spores that may be present in your glovebox doesnt get thrown into the air and land on your projects.

most people flame there needle inside of there glove box. think its a good idea having flammables gasses inside? there have been a few nasty glovebox explosions caused by spraying with these things.

your glovebox just has to be clean. wipe it down with soapy water leaving the surfaces damp, any spores will fall to the floor and stick to the damp surfaces and becuause theres no air currents nothing will be floating around. if you must use just a little bleach.

I guess I get lucky or something, I dont use alcohol much, nor do I use lysol or oust.

Oh. I dont use a glovebox either, g2g transfers, inoculations, etc.  no problem, never a contam.

Any idea why I dont get contams? I dont use that crap, im sure it helps if you have a really dirty house, but i've done it the same way at multiple residences.

I guess im lucky.
(thats like the 2nd time i had to say that this week! argh)

Never use alcohol or anything else that's flammable  in a glovebox unless you want to create a bomb when you flame sterilize.

I use oust inside and outside of my glove box before use.
I just wait about ten minutes before use.
And of coarse flame on outside of box at all times.

some people are just lucky to have a low spore count in there work area, i have to use one as without it i get contams 90% of the time.

im guarenteed green mould without a glovebox.

I have pets, so I us alcohol then oust to be safe.
My pets don't have fleas,But lets just say if there was one around,
Fleas are known to carry viruses and germs.
Just think about the bugs and germs that you carry in everyday!!!
It sure is not going to hurt being extra safe.

RR once said more than 70% alcohol is counterproductive it needs to be diluted with water so that germ cells and spores open up to the solution and let the alcohol in. So take your 91% and dilute it down to 70.

PS you guys are crazy, with a flame inside the glovebox.

yep gloveboxes can turn into an inferno if ppl aren't very carefull. I think there was a post like 2 weeks ago where someone's caught fire and singed their arms b/c of alcohal or oust in it.
