buy an igloo cooler, small fish tank heater and a tube of silicone sealant.  Grab a water bottle and stick the heater in it and fill with water then seal around the top.  Plug it in and crank it up and then put it in the cooler with the jars.  Bam you have yourself an incubator.  Look up heater bomb tek if you need more instruction.

You'll come to find many people on this board do not suggest using an incubator as it can slow mycelium growth. I tried using an incubator my first time, and the jars took forever to grow, allowing some bacteria to form. As long as the air temp is always around 78-84 (at least that's the sweet spot for my jars) I feel you're perfectly fine and do not need to worry about incubation.

Don't take my word for it though...read around

under your sink in the kitchen might be a bad idea....sounds like a great place for mold to take hold on to your jars.......  put them on a shelf in a room that stays to a moderate temperature.  you shouldn't have to incubate your jars unless you are living in the Antarctic and having troubles heating your house.  it also isn't necessary to "keep in the dark and cover with a black garbage sack"....KISS

incubators are the prime way to colonize jars...  I don't know who started the idea that they aren't?  Ultra clean and sterile environment with the temperature and light controlled to the perfect parameters for mycellium growth..

How does that not make sense?  All i know is that it has always worked perfectly for myself and tons of fellow mushies..

Room temperature is just fine for growing (75F) if you are storing in a particularly cold area then yes an incubator could help.

The reason that most people do not recommend incubators to those just starting out as it can cause more problems than the benifet  of any benifit to be gained.

Patience is the key.

It would be a shame to discover that after leaving your incubating projects for a while and discover that temps have shot up well above 80F which can slow growth down and even harm mycelium. Above this temperature can encourage the growth of other moulds and bacteria.

While incubating can have its benifits, its sometimes better to keep it simple. Especially when starting out.

roger that..  While i fully agree in keeping it simple, come on though...  cooler + heater bomb= incubator.  Not alot involved in that.  But hey that's why theres tons of different tek articles and tons of different methods right..  Everyone should grow how they have the mot success no matter what method that may be..
