XBOX Fans For Your Fruiting Chamber!
    #8792562 - 08/18/08 10:10 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Have an old Xbox system laying around that is broken or that you never use? Take those fans out and put them to use!

First, you need to know how to open your Xbox! Go to this website, which is llamma.com to find out how! It will tell you the supplies you need to do so.

Once you remove your Xbox hard drive and DVD drive, your Xbox should look like this:

See those two fans? Those are the fans you will be salvaging!

Now you need a power source for your fans! These two fans run on 12 volts, so find a 12 volt wall plug you have around. I'm no electrician, but I'm pretty sure if you use the wrong voltage, it will burn out the motors inside.

I will update with the rest of this how-to tomorrow!

You'll do more than burn out the motors... You can start a fire.

Now I need all of your help. I need to know which plan is best for setting up the fans without losing humidity!

Keep in mind there are a few holes in my fruiting chamber. Having both fans seems like overkill. I thinking option three would be best.

Advice!

nah, if you use the right transformer you should be fine. I would just put the fan on a timer so they dont run all the time. your xbox never caught on fire from the fan running did it? u need to figure out what those fans run off of. if its 24v then u need a 110 to 24v transformer. wire it up the correct way and it should be fine. just use common sense. but yeah on a final note, if done CORRECTLY there shouldnt be any problems. and to be on the safe side run them on a timer. I dont think they were made to run 24/7. plus on a timer you would be able to maintain a better humidity level. oh yeah you could use like a cell phone charger or something like that to run the fans. just make sure the output of the transformer matches the volts in which the fans run off of. take some pics and keep us updated.

Hah, sorry to burst everyones bubble, but I did not need help with the voltage and wiring and how to prevent a fire.

Haha.

I was explaining to people looking at this tek how not to burn anything down.

Thanks anyways!

Besides that, wouldnt essentially PC case fans create too much air flow and screw the humidity of a FC??  Like for instance I live in a place thats about to be fucking Martian winter temperatures and there will be ZERO water vapor in the air as it will all be frozen..I need my perlite to do all it can.  I'm mailing out frozen solar plasma if anyone wants any soon..

I am wondering the same, if anyone read my second post in this thread...

The small heatsink fan might be about right though. Not too much air flow, enough to stir it up a bit!

I have a single CPU fan also in my FC, it's a shotgun FC and the fan is direct in the middle, it does work well, see pic;

It blows used air out the bottom holes and i know it sucks in via the top, i tested it with cigarette smoke

Since it's a 12volt fan i found out an old 12 volt cell phone charger, it doesnt really matter which way you wire it cos if it goes the wrong way around, you switch the wires around and it blows forward rather than backward... I got wall plugs to create the 'hang' and screwed the fan into the bottom of the plugs and screws through the top of the FC to hold it in place:thumbup:

Not trying to be an ass here, but most fans these days just won't work if you wire them backwards.

Are you referring to DC,AC, or both?

DC is what I was referring to. However, AC it doesn't matter at all. It should blow air the correct direction(the direction specified on the body of the fan) even if you flip the leads.

PS: Don't take my information as insults, I'm merely trying to provide the correct information so people don't seriously  fuck things up.

 we here run on AC (UK) and my you're right, i do remember now when i attempted to wire it up, one polarity it did not work, the other it did, i fixed it by facing the fan the right way down, WD for pointing that out !

Either of those fans will push at least several cubic feet per minute. Turning them on for 10-15 minutes would be a good replacement for fanning, but left to run 24/7, would probably dry the grow out. I'm thinking that 15 minutes every hour (-w- a cheap 24 hour timer) would probably be too much. A variable timer switch, now that would work nicely with fans, if you're willing to spend 80 bucks on one.

Still, without the timer, manually turning it on and off a couple times a day would be a pretty good deal to replace manual fanning.

Good point again! - i have mine on for 10 minutes every 3 hours

If that produces good results, you could use a 15 minute timer to get 15 minutes of air every three hours.

I automated FAE (at a much lower volume) to run 24/7, so I've never played around with timing FAE. I use the variable switch for misting. It would work well for FAE, but at 80-90 bucks, isn't the first option.
