Quitting smoking sucks
    #8792045 - 08/18/08 05:34 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Ugh.  I haven't had a cigarette in probably close to two weeks now (I've had drags here and there, but never a full one), and just found out I am really in a hole financially.  Definitely the worst I've ever been.

I do, however, have $17 in my wallet right now, and spending $5 on a pack of cigarettes is starting to sound like an excellent idea.  I just drank my last beer and have no ganja....

Bah!  I want a cigarette!

You can stay clean. Save  that money, save those lungs. Now that you've been down to smaller amounts of nicotine, how about cutting it off completely? It'd be for the best. Good luck!

Don't do it man.  The longest I stayed off of cigs in the past 7 or 8 years was one month.  If it wasn't for supportive friends denying me them every time I was feeling overwhelmed etc. then that time would have been much shorter.  Try to remember why you quit.  There has to be a reason.  I actually had a sheet which had the negative effects of smoking and the positive effects you should notice after quitting.  That did help a little.  Buy some fruit with your five dollars instead.  That should help with the cravings.

Ya, rounding day 2 (in a row, I've had a few days speckled with no drags) of zero nicotine.  I was doing good until I found out how royally fucked I am.  On top of my own shit, a friend borrowed me some money recently and said he probably wouldn't need it for awhile, but he just had 2 tires on his car blow out and needs some cash to fix it.  :crankey:

On top of all that I'm trying to woo this sweet ass chick.  How's that gonna work when I'm broke as a mutha-fuckin joke and fiending for a cig?

:kingcrankey:

What prompted your decision to quit?

A number of things:

1.  I'd just smoked a carton in about a week.  I NEVER do that, and it kinda scared me
2.  I was broke
3.  I was in the EU, and cigarettes were 5 euros for a pack of 17
4.  The girl I'm chasing after said she couldn't date somebody who smoked

Basically in that order.

1, 2, and 3 are all excellent reasons.  But you shouldn't have to change yourself for someone else, man.

Anyways, reason I asked was because as of late I've been getting increasingly suckered towards enjoying a cigarette or two once a week.  The buzz is just deliciously rewarding, and yet I have some mild worries that it's gonna escalate to a few packs a day.  How did your frequency of use slide into a carton per week?

Buy a bag of chewing tobacco for 2-3 bucks. It will provide enough nicotine to get you through, and is a lot cheaper than patches, gum or smokes. Also - you don't need a giant wad, nor do you have to chew it until brown juice floods your mouth. A few leaves will do the trick as nicotine travels readily through the mucous membrane, almost instantly in fact. I used it to knock down the jones and it really helped, and of course is too disgusting a habit to get hooked on in my case anyway.

Quitting smoking is easy dude....I've done it 3 times today. seriously though, keep up the good work. I wish I could put them down for good.

Well as far as not having to change yourself, that's why it was more towards the bottom.  She never said that to me directly, and I smoked in front of her all the time.  Basically 1-3 were really good motivating factors for me, and I figured, what the hell, now's the time to do it and get some brownie points for it.  Plus, I can see why a non-smoker wouldn't want to date a smoker.

That carton in a week thing was a bit of a fluke.  It's not as though that was my regular habit.  I bought a carton at a duty-free store for $30, and then drank every night of the following week.  That's how I burned through it

I started a couple cigarettes a week, then maybe one a day, then you buy a pack so you don't feel like a mooch, and all of a sudden you're a smoker.

QFT.  And oh god, drinking + smoking is such an enjoyable sin.

Surprisingly I've been doing pretty damn good about drinking and not smoking during these last 2 weeks.  It helped I guess that the girl was constantly around, but now that she's out of town for a few days it just seems real easy to go and buy a pack.  I should just go hang out with one of my smoker friends and get like a drag or 2...or maybe 3.  That would satisfy me right now....

That's probably true.

However, lung cancer is later.  Stress and withdrawal is now.

I like that quote.  Probably not the best way to support his decision though.

Stay strong, circularvortex! The only way to quit is to resist the urge.

I empathize with you brother.  It has been a week with not so much as even a puff off of a cigarette.  Made even harder by the fact that everyone I know smokes.  Then compounded even more by the fact that the ex just came in town and seeing her made me feel like shit and really want one.  I'm holding steady though.  You should do the same. Your body and wallet will thank you later.  That is what I keep telling myself.  Good luck fighting the good fight.
