Shotgun vs. Monotub

Which one is better? (in your opinion) Why? (in your opinion) Have you made any "improvements" on either of these techniques? Is it better for bulk or cakes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
Please don't start arguing and flaming each other.
Just state your reasons and call it a day.
Let's help each other learn. Thanks!

A shotgun fruiting chamber is used to place cakes or cased substrate pans into that keeps humidity up while keeping the number of time you need to fan down.
A monotub is for bulk and the bulk substrate provides its own humidity. a monotub cannot be used for cakes and such.

is that pic dissin' the dead if so man, thats not right the grateful dead is amazing, sober or not aaaannnnyyy way, i think the shotgun is better if you dont have a lot of munny to spend on air exchange systems, but the monotub is better if you want more mushies and can spend a chunck of change on humidifiers and CAE

What's CAE?
And to the second post.... Why couldn't you place perlite or some such in a monotub and place the cakes on top.
This thread is not for arguing about "the dead".

Bump!
I know there are more people who have opinions on this.
It would be great if we could get them all in one thread for the Noob's like me.
Although I already have my TEK figured out.

You dont place perlite and cakes in a monotub because a monotub is made for bulk. It has large holes stuffed with polyfil for when the bulk is colonizing and then this can be removed for fresh air exchange.
shotgun style fruiting chambers dont need polyfil because fully colonized mycelium is less prone to contamination.
Other MONOtub says it is one substrate in the tub, so just by semantics it would be confusing to build a monotub to put cakes in.
Hope this helps

What in the hell is a monotub? I keep hearing its for bulk-substrate, and I was actually going to do a bulk here once my jars finish.
I just planned on tossing the compost and a few spawn jars into regular container with a 6 inch hole cut into it with a hepa filter - is that something like a monotub?

Like Johnny said SG's are for cakes and trays, and monos are fore bulk.

By judging from that, my storage container with the HEPA filter should suffice to spawn on the bulk substrate til I case it - once it's cased I'll definitely be using shotgun FC.

Monotub- a single container will 4 or more holes on each of the long sides, usually 3/4" or bigger stuffed with polyfil. The bulk substrate and/or casing keeps the humidity up inside of the container and the polyfil keeps out contaminants while providing air exchange.
Shotgun- a single container with a couple hundred small holes drilled along all sides and (I believe ) the bottom. Perlite is used to keep the humidity up. No polyfil is needed in the holes because the cakes you put inside should be fully colonized and resistant to contaminants any way.

You can use a monotub for cakes and trays when your not doing bulk at the moment! Put clear lid on the tub and proper light and you have a FC. It does not matter if the sides are blue, green, tan as long as the top is clear. As for as humidity and air, just be a little creative !!!;)

Given the 4 holes or more w/polyfil definition, I'd have to assume a tub with a giant hole with a HEPA filter is about the same. This bulk better work, or I'm going to kick its ass!

Not neccessarily. The placement of the holes is kind of the key to the whole thing working (or so it is believed). There should be a set of holes near the substrate level and a set near the top of the container. I large hole may work, but why not go with the proven method?

I am very, extremely broke right now, so I'm hoping to slide by using what I already have. From what I heard some people get away with keeping it in tupperware bowls and fanning it a few times daily.

as stated above monotubs are more for bulk growing, you directly put the substrate in the tub so the water droplets that form on the sides drip down back into the substrate/casing keeping it hydrated. If you were to put perlite and some cakes in it, it might not work as well. Shotgun FC can be used for both casings and cakes but i've never seen anyone put substrate directly in a shotgun you should make the casings in a pan and put them in the FC on the perlite. Also if your going to do a shotgun make sure its elevated and if your going to do a monotub make sure the tub isn't clear or you will get side pinning only the lid should be clear.
