Fan Filter Unit as Flowhood
    #8791248 - 08/18/08 04:21 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

I have seen roadkill and hyphae talk about using such a thing in the past yet i cant find Roadkills posts concerning how he used it.Is there any modifications that have to be made to it or that should be made to it to make them more efficient or just a way to make them last longer.Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

this is the one I just bought

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290252634128

it seems to be the same type as ive seen anno comment on in the past.

unfortunately I dont think the 24x48 envirco unit blows enough velocity to use as  a hood.  I use a 24x24 envirco mac 10 no problem. The 24x24 units blow about 90 fpm which is barely enough (they say 100fpm is the minimum, I can verify this 90fpm works well enough.

When you get it try the flame test. Some of them even have an adjustable airflow and you may be able to crank it up a little.

It's not going to output laminar flow at all. There will be turbulence in the air stream which WILL introduce contaminates into the flowing air as it comes out of the filter.

You're still good though. You can run the thing in the room you work in to help remove contaminants from the air before you work.

EDIT: Now that I've checked the link a little more thoroughly, it MAY be alright to use if you can find new blowers for it to bring the output up a little. I'd thought it was going to be once of those self-contained "hepa-filter" things people use in heir homes and offices.

if you look at the complete listing you will see it outputs at 90cfm,same as the mac -10 which a few people i have seen on these boards use with success.sandman- did you just mount it horizontal without any mods?if thats the case i am a very happy mycologist

Yup just right on its side and no mods except I removed the prefilter and duct taped a AC filter to the back side in its place (my prefilter was ruined).

Mine doesn't have the 8" duct on it like yours though, I could see that being an airflow bottleneck.
