So I started playing about 3 days ago and damn my fingers hurt. How did you guitar players out there start out? What are some good things to do or learn when starting off?
Right now I'm learning the song New Soul by Yael Naim from these two videos:

Scales everyday will get your fingers in shape.

Then move to chords.

Just learn the basic chords, practice some scales.  In about a week your fingers won't hurt anymore and you'll have some good callouses to work with.

Nice, stick with it man it will be worth it.  I just started playing, well about 6 months ago now.  All i can really tell you is practice as much as possible it may be frustrating sometimes but your fingers will get stronger.

Work on technique. Start slow and slowly increase speed when learning chords, (to be sure you are sounding all the strings), and also with riffs.

Then you have good technique when you speed up, so you'll be able to concentrate on the music you play instead of your playing itself once you get better.

Also, for the beginner it is good to:

-LEARN AS MANY CHORDS AND MODES AS POSSIBLE, learn all the positions and practice them up the fretboard, down, all around slow, fast, and if all 5 positions. This helps you get an idea for where everything is and ultimately is how you shred like the pros.

-Alternate pick. Important shit there.

-Play to CD's. The best way to learn is to do. It may take a while, and start with easier guitar songs, but learning by ear will do wonders for you on many levels.

As far as the callouses go, yeah it's gonna hurt for a little. Just keep at it and the callouses build up quick. Want REAL monster callouses? Play the bass!

Best of luck. It's a wonderful thing to have.

When you hear a song you like, learn it no matter how hard it may seem just keep learning chunk after chunk of it.

When it comes to learning play slower than you think is playing slow. You need to be watching your technique. Are you pressing too hard, are you tense, are you alternate pick(remembering that alternate picking is only as fast as your up strokes and down strokes combined).

Be comfortable and relaxed when you play. Don't slouch, breath deep.

A fun song that isn't too hard to start with is Wish you were here by Pink Floyd. I know a bunch of people(Me Included) who leaned that as their first song.

Check out http://www.freelicks.net/ Kristofer Dahl is a hilarious guy who is great at teaching.

I'm probably forgetting a lot but most importantly have fun and never give up no matter how frustrated you get.
