stalled substrate?
    #8790566 - 08/18/08 01:29 PM (10 years, 1 day ago)

i spawned some brf cakes on 8/11 to coir/coffee, so today is a week.  i checked them two days ago and saw a lot of colonization, but when checking them today. it looks like it hasn't grown at all since two days ago. i also spawned some wbs jars to coir on the 8/15 and those are almost colonized.  i know the wbs goes faster but shit. thats fast. anyone have this problem with coir just stalling out?  the moisture seems ideal by the look of it. and i have foil over the top with a few holes cover with micropore.  any help/suggestions?

most of the time, its just moisture content in the coir that makes them slow down.. HOW colonized are they? I mean, thick white on top? or just patches? does it smell very mushy? lol

it should have taken off with the rest.. usually when they stall out, its either infection or moisture content..

yeah they smell real good....  i would say they are about 80% colonized.  its patchy but mostly mycelium, just a few spots of coir.  i didn't really look at them real good cause i was just peaking under the foil.

the wbs spawns though, will probably be colonized tomorrow.  they are going mad fast.

yeah.. wbs to coir = HOLY SHIT... haha.. im probably going to start a spawn run in a few days.. I will try and get pics if my boy will hook up the camera..

if its still patchy, just leave it in there a lil longer.. thats about all you can do.. then after a few more days, case it and see what happens.. the 1st time I did coir I had the moisture off a bit, and it only looked about 75-80% colonized, just like yours.. I got 3 ozs dry over 3 flushes.. dunking between flushes, of course..

like I said.. give it 2 or 3 more days of dark, then case or whatever you are going to do.. it probably wont colonize any more than that.. lol..

how exactly did you prep it? was it a tall or wide bucket/pot or prepped it in? I find using a really tall bucket or pot works better, because the brick will actually submerge in the water, making the moisture content more consistent..

i took a five gallon bucket and laid the coir in it.  then poured the water on it and covered.  then i let it sit for about 5 hours.  when i went to lay to substrate, i just mixed it all up in the bucket and grabbed hand fulls and put it in the trays.  i checked the moisture by squeezing it and made damn sure it was level (because of the last results of uneven pinning).  i even waited the five days before peeking.  yeah i hope its not having a battle vs. some bacteria.
