my bird flew into flypaper this morning
    #8790218 - 08/18/08 12:16 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

i heard him screaming in his hurt voice and ran out of my room and he was dangling from flypaper.

fucking sucks.

i got it off of him reasonably quick as he bit the shit out of me and cried out alot (tearing my heart up), but then it took me an hour and a half to figure out what to do to get all the glue off him.

the trick is oils dissolve that fly paper gunk.  so i coated him lightly in olive oil, which took another hour because he hates being held and after being stuck in the flypaper he was in no mood to be co-operative.

i'm kind of worried because i couldn't get under his wing, and there was a bunch there, but the olive oil got it off of the rest of him it looks like.

so if that ever happens to you, put olive oil or baby oil on your bird.

oh yeah, so i had to stay awake instead of going to sleep while this was happening.  i have to go to work 2pm-10pm.  shit is going to suck horribly, and i was 2 hours late yesterday so i couldn't call in and say i had an emergency.

Poor little fellow.

Does your bird fly wild around your house all day?

Doesn't he like... shit... EVERYWHERE?

I went for a run around the block yesterday... as I was rounding the corner to get back on my street, a bird flapped about unexpectedly not three feet from me... I glance over and see that a bird (downy woodpecker maybe) had tried to land on the top of a short picket fence, but must have missed.

His ankle was lodged between two of the slats pretty tightly, and he was pretty much just lying there waiting to die until I ran by.

He flapped, I stopped.

Luckily, I was in an incredibly emotionally distraught mood and my heart went out to the little thing. I tried to gently push him upwards without getting too involved, but the leg was lodged tight... so I secured his wings in my hand and held him firmly; took my other hand and carefully slid both sides of his leg upward.

I cringed and whimpered for him, as I slid the raw ankle up between the two slats of wood. He was so firmly lodged in there from struggling, I was afraid I would break the leg.

But I got him out, and then I looked at his leg. It was raw, the skin was missing from the ankle, but it didn't look broken... so I opened my hand, and off he flew.

(Just thought I'd share the story, since it warmed my heart, and we're talkin' bird self-injury...)

But... damn.. what, do you just let it build up under spots he likes to sit? Do you throw some newspaper down and change it now and then or what?

Just wondering, because we've got a couple birds, and they shit so much IN their cage, I can't really imagine  them flying all over the apartment shitting. (Not to mention we have two cats that would eat them.)

i'm kind of desensitized to it, but i clean each of his normal hanging out spots about once a week so the buildup doesn't get intense.

Damn dude. It's like..an urban oil spill.
