Glove box help needed
    #8789258 - 08/18/08 03:12 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Ive been trying to make a glove box with Rubbermaid tubs this past weekend with no success. I've gone through 2 containers so far.

It never occurred to me that cutting holes in the box would be this hard. Ive tried cutting with different knives, drilling holes, but none of these methods are very practical. Just wondering how people get theirs to be so perfectly round.

Also, what can I get to seal the two holes I make? I've seen people use some weird lids that actually screw on the hole--I have no idea what these lids are.

The one glove box I have made so far has 2 very messed up looking holes (lets just say theyre not circles). The edges are so ragged and pointy that I had to end up putting duct tape around it so it wouldn't cut me when I stick my arms in them; will having tape on the inside of a glove box make it more susceptible to contaminants (seeing as how its all sticky and kinda attracts dust)?

Im trying to make a glove box I can be proud of and that Id be able to use for my hobby for a long while. Any advice would be much appreciated.

1) Use a compass to draw a circle on your box. (Alternately, you can use string, a saftey pin, and a Sharpie.)
2) Buy a Dremel.
3) ????
4) Profit!

'tis what I did. $5 and I'll tell you step 3.

My glove box looks like crap I had to drill small holes and cut them together with an exacto-knife, but the box itself was not so much made to last and I'll probibly need a bigger one so I can do G2G transfers more easily.

The secret to cutting the holes so perfectly is to get an 5-8" drill bit (depending on your arm size). Other than that your just doin a haggard job.

Edit: Danm I forgot about dremels.

If you don't have access to a Dremmel, you can try heating your knife over a flame.

dude, ill tell you, it dnt have to be perfect man. what i did.. i took a knife, stabbed the knife into the plastic and then just tried to cut. most of it broke and cracked but it was good enough, afterwards, i taped the sides of the holes up so ya dnt cut urself. just try n cut it just enough so ur hands fit thru it.

Okay, I uploaded this pic of my crap GB and need some feedback, I'll probably make a nice perfectly round one in the future, but if this one works for now, then it'll be fine.

Still, will the duct tape be okay if it's exposed to to the inside of the glove box. For some reason, I figured that it may be an issue, but I'm not sure. Of course I would spray and rub down the whole inside with alcohol before each use, but still it worries me.

just make sure you use 70% alcohol some noobs make the mistake of using 99.1% or 91% if you got a contam risk just gota take care of it proper and the alcohol needs that 30%ish water to get into the cells of germs.

I was one of those noobs if you are wondering.

No need to!  This cost $30.00 to make.  There are many GB teks out there... search for them and just figure out what works best for you.

u know those flat rubber things they used to make to take off jar lids that are too tight?

i cut two of those like a pizza leaving about a one inch ring uncut around the edge to keep it together, then siliconed it to the GB...

it wouldve been PERFECT but the silicone to rubber to plastic was a weak bond...

Shroomy, i like ur design there, what is that aluminun and rivets?

ooooooh, or are those inground light covers???

not everyone has a drill or wants to spend money on this tool but i happen to have one that i use for work.

Alot of plastic containers the plastic is very brittle and even with a really sharp knife you end up shattering the plastic.

A dremil will make quick work of making a few holes,

I like the hot coffee can one, i must try that sometime, Using something hot to melt threw the plastic seems like an ideal way to get nice smooth edges, just do it in a well ventilated area, plastic fumes cant be good for you.
