MEA from Scratch?
    #8789231 - 08/18/08 02:59 AM (9 years, 9 months ago)

Call be a perpetual Penny pincher but at times I think I can learn more if I try to make things instead of always buying them. In the area of making homemade Malt Extract Agar or MEA, has anyone tried making it from scratch where they malted barley berries?  It really doesnt seem that difficult.  To malt barley berries, all one needs to do is to soak the berries in water for three hours, drain them, and allow them to sprout.  Once the roots of the sprouts are about double the length of the berries, they are quickly dried and ground to powder.  The powder is then called malted barley.  The malted barley powder can then be mixed and boiled in water.  When the liquid is filtered, the filtrate is called malted barley extract.  This filtrate can them be mixed with agar and pressure cooked.  The final product is homemade Malt Extract Agar at the fraction of the store bought variety.

Has anyone tried this before?  Is it really that easy?

I follow pretty much the same recipies as are stated in the FAQ.

Copy and Pasted from the FAQ :

Quote:

These recipes are designed for agar maintenance of Psilocybe species. All media have a near-neutral pH and should be sterilized for twenty to thirty minutes at 15 psi pressure. 500 ml of medium will pour around 20 petri dishes. Using a different medium from time to time will prevent the culture getting used to one medium.

Malt Extract Agar (MEA)
10 grams light malt extract
9 grams agar agar
500 ml potable or distilled water

Potato Dextrose (Yeast-extract) Agar (PD(Y)A)
broth from boiling 150 grams sliced potatoes
in 500ml water for 30 minutes(add water to 500ml)
(You can use 5 g of instant potato flakes instead)
9 g agar agar
7 grams dextrose( = glucose, or 10 ml honey or corn syrup )
1 gram brewers yeast or yeast-extract (optional)

If you read the PDYA one there are several different ways you can make it.

This is the one I make.

-PDYA-
500ml water
5 grams of instant potato flakes(Potato Buds Brand)
9 grams agar agar
10 ml honey (Raw natural pure honey - Beemaid Brand)
1 gram of Nutritional Yeast

I switch back and forth with the above PDYA recipy and the MEA.
And have always gotten great results.

Click here for all the agar recipies that are listed!~

good luck!~

from an old thread. personally, I don't know anything about malting though. You could just buy the malt extract

Sounds like it will work, but why bother when Malt Extract is so cheap anyway?

Is this not like saying I can save money by growing my own Rye? (True, but the extra effort and no extra return makes it pretty pointless to do so.)

Oh and I am not sure how you would go about working sugar concentrations out from a filtrate of unknown strength, unless you boil it down etc... which may start to caramelize the sugars?

If you have no Malt Extract and don't want to buy any, then by all means try it and let us know how it does

You guys make some good points, with potatoes, you can eat them afterward. But I'm unsure if I'd want to eat malted barley.
