My dog is a nervous wreck -- any advice?
    #8788061 - 08/17/08 07:37 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Long post, but I need some help Shroomerites.  My dog in his old age has become incredibly nervous and paranoid.  He's about  10 years old, and is a small breed.  Any time there is thunder, firecrackers, or loud construction or lawn work going on outside, he starts panting and shaking uncontrollably.  I can't even take him around lots of people or to chill concerts anymore, because he just freaks out and even the clapping sets him off.  Last night he threw up on the bed from nervousness and kept my gf and I up til 5 in the morning just from a little bit of thunder.

So far I've tried using vanilla as aromatherapy, using music to blare out background noise, comforting (of course), Rescue Remedy, doggy valium, and even giving him pot tincture, but nothing works great.
The doggy valium works, but it takes a little while to kick in, and fucks him up really bad to the point he can't even walk straight if I give him 1/2 a pill.  The pot tincture works alright, takes a few minutes, but he passes out from just a few drops in about 30 minutes if the noises quiet down.  Otherwise, he persists through it for a quite a while.  It's alcohol based, so it's not easy to use.

Does anybody have this problem with their dog and can offer up any advice?

I want to sleep tonight I think we will have more thunder storms.  If this keeps up, I'm worried he's going to give himself a heart attack.

Submerse him in what he's afraid of.  the only way to overcome fears is to realize that what you're afraid of cannot hurt you...

So shoot off fireworks around him, but DO NOT let him get hurt...he should overcome it after a few sessions.

My dog doesn't like thunder and I just grab hold of her and hug her for a few minutes and she calms down.  then she lays down on the couch and I put my legs on top of her and it's smooth sailing.

I want a thunder/lightning storm here soon.  That'd be great.

Good luck with your dawg.:dogapple:

He said his dog is getting old, thats terrible advice.  I had a dog that was like that but overcame it because he was just a puppy, there really may not be anything you can do but baby him till he passes, sorry don't know what to say.
