Lactarius deliciosus et all
    #8788338 - 08/17/08 10:42 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

What are folks thoughts on this 'group' of mushrooms in North America? I seem to read a lot of varied information, with some saying L. deliciosus is actually only found in europe and our NA version is L. deterrimus, and yet further information that breaks down L. deterrimus into several different species.

Guess my question is, should I care? I read that orange cap, orange milk and green staining is edible regardless of how we group it so really should I just let the taxonomists worry about it?

I've had little experience with the milkcaps as the species I come across are invariably mildly poisonous, distasteful, or only very mediocre edibles. I just hope to find plenty of Indigo Milkies one day

I'm in the school of thought that the worry should be left to the taxonomists so long as there are analagous species on both sides of the Atlantic.

All of the Lactarius species that have orange or red latex and stain or bruise green are edible, regardless of species.

Currently these species are probably more like a species complex. There are probably about 4 or 6 species that are not usually separated from each other by collectors. It's not that they aren't separable, it's more like most collectors aren't particularly interested in bothering to do so.

Happy mushrooming!

I found something like Lactarius fragilis.  It was great until I puked my guts up.

:puke:

I'll pass on the Lactarius for now.

Most milkcaps I've found are small orangey-pink things that remind me of L. fragilis, so I guess its a good thing I never bothered to eat one! I also find occasional large, orange milkcaps similar to Lactarius zonarius and numerous Yellow-Latex Milkies under a couple stands of white pine.

Great pics, Implee! I think those are the large orange milkies I found recently. They did taste bad.
