I guess (at the risk of sounding insane) I just want to UNDERSTAND water. 

A water molecule is polar; (polar means one side is positive, opposed by a negative side), water = 1 oxygen atom, 2 hydrogen atoms.  Hydrogen was the first atom to be made in the creation of the universe...seems significant to me.  Oxygen is formed in stars.  Water comes from stars!

Also, water forms regular 6 sided shapes when frozen.  This is also a result of hydrogen bonding.  Because of this, snowflakes form beautiful 6 sided shapes.  But more importantly for life, when water freezes its expands unlike most things when contract when frozen.  This is because the 6 sided shape water makes when frozen takes up more space and the water pushes out and expands.  This is why bottles can break in the freezer when frozen.  This is also why lakes freeze on the top instead of the bottom.  When water freezes it expands and floats to the top.  If it didn't, the ice would sink to the bottom and then be insulated from melting.  It is speculated that if ice sank, bodies of water would remain perpetually frozen and life may have never started at all!


The chemical properties of water are absolutely amazing!  There are others I cant think of right now of course.
