Small hunt OYSTERS and ID request
    #8787912 - 08/17/08 09:09 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing under an oak tree i think

Gills:
poors yellowish, some spots are darker yellow/orange/rust

Stem:
brown white

Cap:
brown with some darker brown areas, kinda feels like an old mans balls with all the little bumps and stuff

Spore print color:
Printing right now

Bruising:
No obvious bruising

Im pretty sure they are oysters, but they are a little dark i guess cause they are old? They were on the same log as some orange mushrooms

I had all these in my hands and and i walked off the trail and some 50 year old dude was like "oooh so your pickin some shrooms are ya?" and i said "yeah i think their both edible" and he said "well i wouldnt waste my time unless there was a purple ring on the bottom"

I lold.

The boletes are cool. I'm going to look in my book to see if I can help.

The oyster looks nice. Big like the ones we talked about growing on the burnt stumps.

Texas Mushrooms says they're probably Leccinum crocipodium

from the book:

Crocipodum translates roughly to "saffron foot," obliquely referring to the somewhat enlarged, bulbous base of this mushroom.

Description: The brown and yellow, cracked and mottled, uneven pitted surface of the cap of this mushroom is the best identification feature. The pore mouths are yellow in youth, darkening in age. The stalks are tan and smooth, covered with very fine dark brown scales, and are enlarged at the base. The spore print color is brown.

Comments: This species is reported edible but flavorless. It is often common wherever oaks are found; throughout the Coastal Plain and the Hill Country.

Season: Summer and fall.

Habit, habitat, and distribution: One of our most common boletes, found in a wide range of habitats and shows much variation. Common in partially wooded areas during warm, wet summers.

Cap diameter: 2.5-5.5 cm
Stalk height: 5-10 cm
Stalk diameter: 6-18 mm

I didnt see any obvious bruising at all Leccinum crocipodium seems about right, but based on the pictures i see on images.google my caps are a bit darker...  I probably saw 20 total while walking around for 10 minutes under  big oak trees so thats another good indication..  Leccinum crocipodium description is pretty much spot on other than the caps being lighter on images.google

If you say so.  I don't have any books on Boletes and I've never bothered to be precise with them.  I looked at the pictures too and there is a similarity.
