Grain Jar SHATTERED in my hand

I was breaking up some grain jars by hitting it against a roll of duct tape. A tip I got from here. I guess I hit the seam or an edge or something and it just shattered in my hand and cut the shit out of my leg.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
Besides a bicycle tire what do you use to break up your jars? I used to use my hands but anything more than 5 jars hurts to much.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

i guess you could of drawn a short straw.. (just unlucky)
Ive only heard of the bicycle tire trick. I work with glass for a living and know some sheets cut perfect others can shatter, comes down to quality, who knows you may just have a bad batch, Maybe you just dont know your own strength lol

Haha, thanks. I think it is one of the jars I've been using for a while. I'm not sure. Scared the shit out of me for a second. Then I didn't realize I'd cut my leg until I saw bloodstains all over the floor. Really sucked.

A pine 2 X 4 or a large phonebook also work. If you use a tire, make sure it's fully inflated. I've broken a few jars from the tire not being hard enough. If it compresses to where the jar hits the aluminum rim, the glass will break. It's rare to break jars when they didn't hit something metal unless they already had a crack. RR

Thanks RR. A pine 2x4. That's just crazy. I know it's soft but I didn't realize it would be soft enough for the jars. Those things are generally pretty sturdy then. Thanks for the phone book tip. I've seen you give it before but had forgotten about it. That's probably what I'll go with as it's small enough to fit in the room I'm working in.

How long did you let it cool? I've broken a few jars by refusing to wait past cool point, (and hitting a deflated tire, simultaneously ), but it seems that if you wait until the heat of the jar is in equilibrium, (completely cooled perhipherally + .5-1 day), this is less common.
This may not be relevant for your situation, but just thought I would add it anyway. Temperature fluctuation can be bad for glass; similar to dropping a fresh BRF jar into a cool water tank when trying to inoculate early. I haven't done that myself, but seen a hefty and hospital worthy scar on a friend I under-informed.

Are the walls padded there too? Does everyone wear white and do your shirts have really long sleeves that tie together behind your back?

Everyone here wears white yes... but the only shirts around here with long tie-able arms are all on the crazies Oh and the walls are checker board pattern, hard white and soft white So for those of us who like to beat our heads on things... we have the choice of soft and hard.. wait... I meant all the crazies get to choose to beat their heads on hard or soft walls

One of those little donut spares would probably work pretty good and wouldn't take much space.

Hell yea! I went to a used tire shop and bought a used tire for $10.00. You know, a small tire that would fit a Ford Festiva! I scrubbed it down and it sits in a corner of my room waiting patiently for "Thumping Time"

just dont ever shake your jars after you get home from the bar and your drunk. I did that one time and hit the jar on something i probably shouldny have and colonized grain went flying everywhere. I didnt even clean it up till the next day. I just laughed and passed out on the couch lol.
Just dont put too much grain in your jars or youll have a hell of a time shaking them up. I had this problem once. the less grain in the jar the easier it is the get everything broken up when you shake or beat them against something. If you have to hit it that hard that it breaks the glass then Im guessing maybe you had too much grain in the jar. thats why I had a hell of a time breaking up my jars a few years ago. After that i made sure not to cram too much in their and never had a problem again.

Breathing in mycelium? Let's shorten our lifetime by doing that? First of all mycelium is not breathable. The spores from the mushrooms themselves maybe, but the the growing culture. Hell, you're cultivating to eat them right?! How does that shorten your lifetime? Am I missing something here?
