water in bottom of jars
    #8786964 - 08/17/08 04:07 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone have tips to prevent this shit? After I PC for like an hour to Hour and a half there's ALWAYS some amount of water in the bottom of the jars. I think covering the lids with a drip guard (foil) helps, but what other reasons does this happen? I believe the water level the jars are in is a big factor too.

I have one of those big F'ing (41 qt?) PCs from All American PC's  and the thing on the bottom that keeps jars from touching is not far from the bottom, so the jars are swimming in water at least 1/3 of the way up. and that is a problem too.

do you use foil to cover your lids with while in the pc?  if not, that may be one of the major problems that is causing water to pool in your jars.

I just did 20 jars with WBS and success! no pooling, it might have just been a popcorn thAng...

I do use foil.

popcorn seems easiest to keep the right moisture content to me.

i think ur problem was

a) water up too high on the jars

or more likely

b) u didnt have the water content of the grain as perfect as you thought.

better on the dry side always, remember, your hydrating with spore solution anyway

well, if you keep having issues with it, chances are the grain didnt strain right/long enough.. or your foil covers for the lids are not on tight.. you have to remember that its a pressure cooker.. its going to find a way around the foil if there is one..

one good way, if you are just having a pain in the ass time, is just to add a 1/4 cup of dry vermiculite.. it will help wick up some moisture.. and it wont hurt anything, though..

but since you are using wbs with no issues now, you are kosher..

You only need 1" of water in the bottom of any AA pressure cooker.  If you'll turn the stove burner down as soon as pressure is reached to the minimum setting that will maintain 14.5 psi, then your 1" of water will last three hours at least.
