Nightshift is a slow death
    #8776134 - 08/15/08 02:18 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Took a supervisor position at nights.  3 months later I have heart problems and major depression, two things that never were even a thought in my life.  Some things are not meant to be messed with, and the natural cycle is definitely one of them (as I am finding out).

If you do it, I gotta ask...how?

Not looking for advice on how to adjust, I'm going to adjust by getting off this shift now.

I did night shift for over 5 years. It did suck, but it was an easy shift...if you consider I never got any sleep. When I finally got off of it my health improved immensely as well as my mood.

Props to you for sticking it that long, but it's this part that worries me.

I used to do it and it didn't really bother me but I have been a night owl my whole life. I know you didn't ask for advice, but maybe you could do some stuff outside after work when there is light outside?  The lack of sunlight has a lot to do with the depression and the depression has a lot to do with your health.

Oh sorry I advice is welcome, just meant that isn't the point of the thread.

Yeah then I go outside and like it so much I get zero sleep and am screwed.  I'm a daytime person and love sunshine.

I moved into an apartment with windows only in the bedroom, not the living room, then I took a job working 11 pm to 7 am for 3 months.  I didn't realize how badly it fucked with me till I quit and moved out.  I fought with depression at the best of times, but I was quite a wreck after that.  Now I simply cannot do night shifts and if go apartment hunting big windows are a must.  Ever since I have noticed how sensitive I am to sunlight.  Hell if it's really cloudy for too long I feel it.  I always hit rough spots in the middle of winter when the days are shortest.  It sucks.

I used to work as a nurse, night shift for a kid that drowned on his second birthday, hes ten now, and his parents wont let him go. Hes on a ventilator and doesn't even blink. I say he drowned, because he died temporarily after being submerged for 7 minutes. The brain damage was unbelievable.
I would be woke up by people looking for drugs three to four hours after getting to sleep from my 11 to 7 fighting morning traffic. It was hell on Ice (meth).

I think this is definatly person dependant.

For me, I can't really work nights.  I go nuts.  Being in school, nights are sometimes the only way you can get good blocks of time, or any time, if your employer only does full shifts.

I've just resigned myself to the fact that I'll get depressed and it won't work if I do more than an occasional night shift.

Yeah, its not for everyone. I actually -prefer- working night shift; as bizarre as that may sound to most normal daywalkers. I did it at a gas station myself and found it very peaceful work compared to working there during the day. Id have about 10 customers an hour, travelers, cigarette addicts, night workers and partyers mostly. I also did the nightshift newspaper delivery thing. Im a person who enjoys my solitiude and I loved that job because I could just roll around listening to music and blazing without people bothering me all the time. I love the kinds of jobs where I dont have to deal with people the most and I prefer to work at night. For socialites and people who draw their energy from interaction with others such occupations can be emotionally draining. I draw my energy from meditation and the best times for meditation are those when you arent disturbed. Buddha said the best time for meditation was between 4-7 am and I believe it.
Even while Im unemployed(like now) I usually sleep in the daylight and spend my nights awake, working on my paintings, setting up cakes, watching movies and surfing the web.

For me, I think working am to pm is a slow death. Id much rather work pm to am.

I love nights.

I'm typically awake from 6pm to 8am.

The nighttime has always seemed so much more peaceful and pretty if that is the right word to use.

Work (i.e. being somewhere you HAVE to be not where you WANT to be for many hours at a time) alone is a slow death.

But seriously though, I used to love working overnights at McDonald's back in the day.  It was the tits.  It really gets to you though, and I could never do it again.  There's just something about working somewhere and watching the sun set then rise all in 1 shift that kind of tweaks me out.  I'm in retail so my schedule is sporadic, but it's never past 10:30 at the worst.

i work for the post office. it is good work.

for many years i was a habitual night-owl, and though there is value in it, for instance feeling more alone with your thoughts (for what it may be worth), it got to me without my even realising it.

turning that on its head was better for me than i could have ever imagined.

being a postie is pretty good for the soul.
