Does Isolation On Gentamicin Agar Injure Isolates?

Ive read in a couple places that discouraged the isolation of mushroom cultures on gentamicin enriched agar. The reason given for avoiding its use was that while gentamicin does kill bacterial contaminants, its rumored that it also damages the chromosomes of the mushroom isolates. I do know that most living organism have reparative mechanisms, but I wondered if the use of gentamicin agar is really that problematic. Could it be just my imagination and the power of suggestion? The mushroom cultures that I were able to isolate on gentamicin agar do appear less vigorous than cultures isolated on regular MEA.
What do you think? Whats your opinion of the use of gentamicin enriched agar?

Use antibiotic agar only as a "last" resort. If you've tried to isolate a given strain or species repeated without success on regular agar formulas, then try antiobiotic media. Otherwise, try to stick with regular formulas. The only time I wouldn't try regular formulas is when dealing with a species/specimen you aren't likely to find/obtain again. Then, you should do all that's in your power to obtain a clean sample/isolate. (which usually includes the use of antibiotics)

I use antibiotic agar as a matter of course before transferring to master culture slants. I don't want any hidden bacteria going into long term storage with my cultures. I also use it as a matter of course when working with any outdoor fruits that I've cloned. I have never noticed any genetic problems, and mycelium grown on gentamicin sulfate agar fruits normally. RR

RR, which antibiotics do you use? Gentamicin? Chloramphenicol? Others? Combinations?

Gentamicin Sulfate has never done me wrong... but like RR stated, only if I think i need it or right before culture storage

genta and clora are being used for decades in medical mycology; i never read something about genetic damage.
