Do you agree with Joe?
    #877710 - 09/11/02 12:31 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I go to school at a university in the bible belt and last year there was this campaign called "do you agree with joe?". I'll tell it like a story. One day I came out of my dorm room to walk to school stepped outside and every ten feet written on the ground all over campus was this quote saying "do you agree with joe". It was written at least 10000 times or more all across campus. it struck debate among the "not in the know"students as to what all this meant. Then about a week later drones of people wore identical neon green shirts to class and around campus saying "I agree with joe". What these people purpose was to attract people who didn't know what the "do you agree with joe" campaign was about and tell them what it was about. Come to find out the whole thing was about spreading Christianity. Joe was a student on campus. I asked the green shirted people if they even knew who joe was and 90% of them said no but they still agreed with him. His basic message that he wanted you to agree with was do you love jesus and humankind etc.... Most of these green shirted people didn't even know what they were agreeing with they were just jumping on the christian bandwagon. Is this disturbing to anyone else? i think it just shows that religious people are sheep and they really cant think for themselves and the way they were recruited and recruit other people into their belief system is through peer pressure and fear, fear of ostricism. Joe had a public speaking and people that agreed and didn't agree with joe attended. He told his life story like he grew up in the ghetto or something and christianity saved him. But his life story was soooo lame. He came from an upper middle class family. he said dedicated himself to jesus when he was born and jesus saved him from a life of evil. then they were allowed to ask him questions but only the people wearing "i agree with joe" shirts were allowed to ask. It was one of the most blatant displays of the mental rape of religion i have seen. comments please.

Well that just shows the following nature which many humans have. I despise that sort of behaviour.
Why follow when you can lead??  :smirk:
I would of wore a "I agree with joe shirt" and then shouted, "Joe stinks, joe sucks cock", at his speach.

I think that if i was a christian I would have been extremely offende. Joe was portraying himself as jesus. And then he gets up on a pedastal like hes on the cross or something and then portrays his life story like hes some kind of a "chosen one" or martyr. my gut feeling from the beggining was that it was some kind of jesus thing. the name joe is kind of close to jesus

In reply to:

Christianity has such a firm grip on much of humanity not because it made people fear ostricism, but because it made them fear for their lives. According to scripture, the punishment for not believing in God is Hell. Not only that, but for most of Christianity's history, nonbelievers were murdered if they refused to convert.

Death threats are religion's greatest evolutionary development, and its most powerful tool.

You should appreciate your school for the marvelous surreal absurdity that it is!

I think you missed a lot of the substance and were blinded by the surface of what you saw.

"i think it just shows that religious people are sheep and they really cant think for themselves and the way they were recruited and recruit other people into their belief system is through peer pressure and fear, fear of ostricism."

No, you missed the bigger picture. It shows that all people cannot think for themselves and most of them can be manipulated by peer pressure and the fear of ostracism. The religious ones are just a subset of a larger group called humanity. If you do not yield to the same pressure you are uncommon.

Cheers,

this reminds me of when the WWJD thing was started. WWJD = What Would Jesus Do. It spread through my middle school like the bubonic plague. The first time i saw it, it was on a bracelet. Then everyone had the bracelet. Next i saw it on a necklace, then a t-shirt. I dont think anyone in that school was religious at all, but because people started wearing the bracelet, everyone had to.
