Damp Rid
    #8774774 - 08/14/08 10:14 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

So this buddy of mine told me that damp rid is the greatest thing to use while trying to dry your harvest. He told me that it would have to be left in there for 24 hours, then it would feel like a piece of leather. Well my hole stock looks dry, but it is not leathery at all, they are actually breaking they are so dry. Am I doing something wrong? or is this normal? Is there a better drying technique?, and if you dry for too long do they loose potency?

They are fine. The less moisture the better. You only dry the mushrooms to keep them from rotting. Moisture = mold = rotten = just beer tonight...

The dryness that you have described is "cracker dry"; it's good. If you want them leathery for some reason, don't leave them in your desiccation chamber for so long. :goodluck:

I could never come up with a good damp-rid container, so I always fan dry.  To each his own.

I'm a "Fan dry" guy myself but keep in mind that you aren't going to get them cracker dry or keep them that way if you live in an area where the humidity is high.I have always had great results with fan drying till cracker dry and than storing with silica as the desiccant,I have only used damp rid on one or two occasions and after accidentally letting the mushrooms touch the stuff and making them taste like I dumped a salt shaker in my mouth I resolved to never buy the stuff again
