Invisibility Cloak & All Optical Networks
    #8768886 - 08/13/08 03:42 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

If all of our network routing/switching hardware became 100% optical, would that mean most of the internet would be delay free? Would the equipment managing the signal still introduce delay into the lines? Would an all optical signal path suffer from attenuation at all?

This makes me hope the only bottle necks in the future will be the regional light<-->electrical conversions

I guess the invisibility cloak would be cooler to own, but I doubt that will ever be possible. I'm down for faster internet though, its almost fucking 2009, our network infrastructure is kinda pooop.

Invisibility cloaks may be a bit closer to reality, researchers say, thanks to the development of two new materials that are the first to bend visible light the "wrong" way in three dimensions.

Define 'delay free'  Seriously, would the delay be imperceptible?  It could be.  If the bandwidth is high enough and the latency is low enough, then the bottle neck may be your machine and not the internet.

But consider that as bandwidth increases, so will our individual consumption of bandwidth.  Though the future networks may handle today's network traffic without delay, what about tomorrows when people download HD movies every night.

Ten movies streaming across that internet, and what happens to your own personal internet?
