Hunting in the North East US (New England)?
    #869691 - 09/07/02 10:40 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I'm a n00b obviously.

I'd like to know if any of you experienced mycologists know of any psychoactive species that are cold wheather tolerant and appear in te North East US around this time of year. I've exhausted the resources on the web and figured I'd check here before buying a field guide for this area.

Thanks

Save your money, there aren't any bluing mushrooms in the north east. You might get lucky and find some Amanitas. But i wouldn't count on it. They are very sensitive to pollution, and the east coast if full of it.
Good luck though

Hey MindTrap,

Go to the Shroomery's Grow/Find Section and there is a paper by John W. Allen and friends about the distribution of mushrooms throughout America and Canada, and also a larger paper with listings of psychoactive mushrooms throughout most of the world.
-TThat is either in the grow/find section or it is in the general info section.

New England is sort of a vast generalization.
-Upstate newyork has a good amount of various psychoactive mushroom species to be found.
-I also would think that northern Maine would be a great place for Psilocybe semilanceata also known as the Liberty Cap.

All New England states host a good amount of Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Keep shroomin,
GG

Hey guys, I just checked out that document and there is no listing for Connecticut. Im pretty sure there has to be some here. Does any one know a strain that grows in Connecticut. Im reading up as quick as possible. I live near a huge wooded area with dead birch, oak, maple, etc trees and a river and swamp. Are any of these places good to look? I was looking today and found a bunch of young mushrooms that were white and brownish purple growing under a dead birch tree that has been rotting. If anyone could give me a heads up on what to look for in CT Id really apreciate it. Thanx

There are indeed active in the Northeast... Mostly Gyms, though look up MA, RI Psilocybe on YouTube and there are a few videos of actives found...

Check the link in my signature to see what grows in your area. There are a few actives in the NE.

I find Gyms all the time in CT. The only thing is I have 20 acres of property and it’s like prime habitat for them I’ve never found them before moving here. They also take A LOT to get a level 3. I finally started growing my own fruit and sclerotia (your best bet). Your only other option is if you can get access to a farm in the summer cause pan subs are pretty bountiful.

I read up on a lot before my adventures. I haven't had much luck with magic. Lots of other species, mostly wood lovers. Much of what I find has either just died or has been dead. Found dead-blackened Gyms on a cut Oak with sawdust all around it about 2 weeks ago. That was all I've saw of them. Scooped a bit of the matter with hope of life after death lol. RI seems to be more rewarding, I would think because of the ocean. Maybe pollution plays a part. Most of the rivers around me seem to have more shit than water.

I have found gyms in the northeast to be fairly common. Concentrate your hunting around cherry and maple trees they seem to prefer these trees.  Fresh gym tea is awesome

Gymns are definitely a good start. Look for them during late summer / autumn

Psilocybe quebecinsis is a potent psilocybe which occurs in the NE. There have been several posted finds this season. Search this site for that species. Alan Rockefeller recently confirmed that this species is identical to psilocybe aztecorum which occurs in the mountains of Mexico.

Thank you! Great pics and info.
I am practically right on the line of MA and RI, where mostly ignorance grows and the woods get smaller. 😁 I placed an order with Spore Depot so I am hoping to put an end to this nonsense of pecking through the leaves.

I grew up under a mile from the line between MA and RI- probably all you'll find are gyms and maybe cincts, though occasionally other stuff shows up in the area. psilocybe stuntzii, or something like it, has been found once in southern RI and once in Connecticut, and psilocybe caerulipes has been found a few times too. p. quebecensis/aztecorum, has been found once or twice in connecticut (though i have suspicions about these finds being some other psilocybe, perhaps as yet unnamed).

I found Psilocybe caerulipes in vermont in 2018, a few others have found them too in vt and in nh, not to far from ma border
There are also reports of psilocybe quebecensis in the same area. They are hard to find but if you do your homework and know when and where to look and some determination dreams can come true.
